Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Swinney.
Hi Erin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Greater Memphis Area’s LGBTQ businesses did not have a dedicated chamber of commerce to address their concerns or champion their unique causes. In 2021, we started the MidSouth LGBT Chamber to create a network of rainbow and allied professionals across the tri-state area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No it has not. In this anti-DEI climate, we have worked hard to maintain memberships, as many non-profits have struggled to keep valuable donors. When we first started, we had to solidify our working relationship with the Tennessee Pride Chamber in Nashville through a series of negotiations. We are allied organizations now, and we are strengthening our connections with other chambers. We are partnered with the MidSouth Latino Chamber of Commerce and recently, the Greater Memphis Chamber. Intersectional collaboration is how we will make it through this challenging season we’re in, as we gather resources for the communities we serve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our network of resources and community engagement spans across three states, fostering connections and creating opportunities throughout Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Together, we’re building a more vibrant and inclusive business ecosystem in our region.
Whether you’re looking to expand your network, learn new skills, or make meaningful business connections, there’s something for everyone at our networking events. Our monthly mixers and special events create meaningful relationships that foster an inclusive professional community. We advocate for our businesses at Day on the Hill events in conjunction with the Tennessee Equality Project, whose watchful eye keeps us aware of new bills and how they potentially affect our community. We also provide educational opportunities that focus on allyship, and how to navigate today’s business landscape and political climate. Our primary goal is to ensure the success of our business community, and to provide resources, jobs, and support for the LGBTQ+ community of the tri-state area.
October 13-18 is our first ever LGBTQ Business Week. We would love to highlight your business, if you are LGBTQ+ owned, or if you are an ally. Any business that is interested in participating can sign up at the following link: https://midsouthlgbtchamber.org/the-1st-annual-lgbtq-business-week/.
How do you think about luck?
We’ve been lucky to secure the relationships that we have. There is a synergy in networking with like-minded people who have the best interest of the city at heart. We are building the infrastructure to care for our people, one business card at a time. People that we need to help further our cause seem to show up out of nowhere, willing to roll up their sleeves and get into the trenches with us. I am humbled and beyond grateful for their help.
