Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Yount.
Hi Madison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started to become very interested in the beauty world when I was around 11/12. I followed and rewatched videos over and over from Jaclyn Hill, Tanya Burr, Zoella, Jeffree Star, Tati Westbrook, etc. I would stay up all ours of the night trying to replicate their work on myself. As I got older makeup became an escape, a way for me to be really creative, and to feel beautiful.
I was always the friend who everyone wanted me to do their makeup or their hair before an occasion for some reason, even from the age of 14. Eventually, I became more interested in doing makeup on other people rather than myself. I loved tailoring looks to different people’s styles, and being able to enhance the beauty that I could already see in everyone. It became the most validating aspect of my life. When I was 19, I booked my first ever wedding! From that point on, I was determined to turn what was a hobby into a fulfilling career. In 2023 I quit my corporate 9-5, and dived head first into being a full time Bridal + Event Makeup Artist!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth, but I am very lucky to have had a wonderful support system throughout my journey. My father who saw my passion from a young age, bought me my first travel kit when I was 16. He knew I wanted to become a makeup artist, and didn’t let me shy away from that. He pushed me into it more. I’ve also had the opportunity to work with amazing mentors like Leslie Burks, who has not only done my hair for almost a decade but has become a sister to me. She hired me as her assistant when I was around 18, and really welcomed me into the beauty world. I got to see all the nitty gritty aspects behind the chair, how challenging it can be, how stressful it can be, but that only made me want it more.
I spent around 5-6 years working office jobs to make a steady living while also taking makeup clients whenever I could. The hours were long, and my days ran together most of the time, but it never felt like work to me. Every time I pick up a brush or someone sits in my chair, it’s like a light turns on inside me. The corporate job I was working in 2023 was causing me an unbelievable amount of burnout, and in the end I had to make a decision between a job that offered me stability or a career that could offer me freedom & fulfillment. So I did what any normal person would do – I walked in and quit on the spot one day. The next thing I know, I called Leslie to share my good news, and unbeknownst to me, she was already in the process of getting a bigger salon. And she immediately asked me to be a part of her team. It has been an amazing ride ever since!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I offer a variety of services including lash extension application, lash lifting & tinting, brow lamination, brow waxing, as well as Bridal Makeup & Hairstyling! I have been a makeup artist since 2018, and doing lash & brow services since 2023. I specialize in neutral, full glam makeup looks that are perfect for weddings, photoshoots, special occasions, etc. I’m most proud of the fact that I am self taught, and I believe that sets me apart. It has made me work harder to earn my place and my clientele. I have been so lucky to work with hundreds of brides over the years, and it brings me so much joy getting to be a part of their special day.
I became more interested in lash and brow services once I became a full time makeup artist as a way to offer more than just makeup to my brides. I could help prepare for their big day by getting their brows cleaned up and shaped as well as giving them a fresh set of lashes so they wouldn’t have to worry about mascara running the day of, and they could be set to go on their honeymoon! It’s also been a wonderful opportunity to keep in touch with previous brides and still get to see them as clients. I’ve also acquired so many more amazing clients through these services, and it brings me such a sense of accomplishment.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I love that I get to make people feel beautiful as a career. It has brought me an amazing amount of joy!
