Exploring Life & Business with Ahmed of Silver Bull Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahmed.

Hi Ahmed , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey there, I’m Ahmed Alaina… born and raised Germantown resident. I was the quarterback from Germantown High School and voted Male Athlete of the year for Germantown. While playing football, I tore my labrum and rotator cuff, which led to my first surgery. I’d say that process definitely put health and wellness first got on my radar. Though young at the time, I questioned the rehabilitation process. I like to understand everything so I started researching the body and how it works. This eventually led me to pursue a degree in physical therapy. While at the University of Memphis getting my undergrad in sports and exercise science I was interning at a local gym, CrossFit Silverbull. CrossFit drew my attention at the time bc of the functionality at the roots of it. While I grew to not appreciate some of the methodologies that became associated with CrossFit I did and still do believe in its core… functional fitness. Training and strengthening everyday movements to reduce risk of injury later in life. Fast forward, internship led to full time coaching while balancing PT school. At this point owning my own physical therapy clinic and rehabbing people back to their fullest capabilities through functional fitness was my mission. What I wasn’t prepared for, was the current owner wanting to sell the gym. Since I was already treating my patients out of the gym, it only made sense to buy it from her. Obviously lots in the cracks but that’s how I got to where I am today. It’s been a joy to help quite literally change peoples lives and I hope to continue to improve many more.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been. The service industry is tough. You quite literally pour yourself into people all day everyday and more times than not, they don’t stick around. It can be tough. I tell people all the time they are my whole life (collectively) but I’m just a small speck of theirs. That reality can be tough and also watching people “fail” despite all your efforts, is hard. By fail I mean not loose the weight, not hit the PR, not stay committed to the plan, quit, etc.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a functional fitness gym with a Doctor of Physical Therapy who has their undergrad degree in sports and exercise science, as the owner. Why does this matter? Well, in this day and age with “exercise” at the ease of our fingertips, everyone thinks they can just pull up a workout and have success. For some people, sure.. they might get lucky but the reality is… it’s not always that simple. People don’t realize the pre-existing conditions they are dealing with. How many people say “oh I can’t weight train, I always get hurt”. Well, they get hurt for a reason. It’s important to have coaches that can spot things you yourself are unaware of that lead to these injuries. People, especially these days, are walking around with all sorts of mobility limitations that left alone WILL cause issues when starting an exercise regiment or with age later in life.

At Silverbull, I train my staff with my PT knowledge. We coach ever individual, every class. Safety is our tip top priority but also, RESULTS. Everybody and their mama thinks they can write a workout and it be effective. Again, this is false. I do all our programming myself. There’s a rhyme and reason to everything programmed, everyday. We aren’t hear to waste people’s time. My goal is for people to be their healthiest version of themselves not for a year but for well into their 60s, 70s, 80s. We aren’t doing the trends… we do what works for the present and the future. That takes education and deep understanding of the body and how it works. That’s what we offer.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was probably being on the field throwing the tying football touchdown my senior year against Christian brothers.
