Inspiring Conversations with Tierra Youmous of Bows 2 Fros

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tierra Youmous.

Hi Tierra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For as long as I can remember, I was always a creative child and was highly encouraged by my family. Growing up I wanted to become a fashion designer so I would make clothes for my dolls out of paper towels and rubber bands.

As I got older that desire to become a fashion designer kind of took a backseat so that I could see how creative I could get. If I saw something cool or different, I’d think ‘oh I can probably make that’ and I would shop at Walmart and Joann Fabrics for craft supplies.

First, I started making anklets and bracelets, and then I moved up to making hairbows. In 2014, I finally decided to share my craft with the world. I named my business Bows 2 Fros because of my current craft and I was a year into my natural hair journey and wearing hairbows helped me love my afro so much.

After receiving such positive feedback, my crafter’s brain started wanting to create other things and the next thing I know, I was decorating bottles, making tutus for both children and adults, body butter, scrubs, lip gloss, lipstick, keychains, coasters and now I’m making different soaps that people really love.

I wanted to show the world that a little craft can go a long way. It brings me so much joy, knowing that people are enjoying something that I created.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No business has ever succeeded without some form of struggle. As much as I take pride in being such a creative person, it does have its drawbacks. I struggled with focusing on one project and I had to try and force myself not to purchase more craft supplies that weren’t necessarily needed.

Everything I know about running a business, I had to learn through countless research. I had to learn about remitting sales and using taxes and coming up with more efficient ways to give quality products without spending more than necessary. I had to come up with effective accounting and marketing strategies so that I don’t get stressed out.

I’m still learning but now I’ve formed connections with other business owners and have taken to using them and my family as sounding boards for different ideas. This year, I said that I wasn’t going to purchase more than what was needed and monitor my spending so that I can stay within budget, so let’s see how it goes.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Bows 2 Fros?
Bows 2 Fros is not about limiting ourselves to one craft. We create as much as our heart desires, from button earrings, lipstick, body butter, scrubs, and even soaps. Bows 2 Fros is about showcasing your creativity. It’s about taking the simplest of things and turning them into something beautiful.

It’s about being unique and creating something of your own without worrying about how others perceive you. Expressing your creativity could be as simple as making a statement by wearing a bold shade of lipstick, rocking different headbands, picking out the best jewelry that compliments your outfit, or strutting a tutu.

By shopping with Bows 2 Fros, I want people to know that I would never sell something that I wouldn’t use or be proud of. I’m always working on new formulas and taking their concerns into account to improve my products and business.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would most definitely have to shout out to my mama and grandma.

Those ladies fed my creativity by teaching me how to sew and giving me my first sewing machine. They would always encourage me to do great things with my creativity. My biggest supports are most definitely my sisters, cousins, and my boyfriend.

They’re with me at every popup shop, advertising my products and providing feedback on how I can improve. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be as ahead as I am now.
