Life & Work with Kelly Sage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Sage.

Hi Kelly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Oh man, it’s been such a long and winding road. Haha! When I turned 30, I had just had my second child. I was feeling like I needed to do something with my life and I was so tired of working jobs that I didn’t like and didn’t pay well.

I decided to go to massage therapy school. This was a huge life-changing event for me. Previous to that, I had taken Reiki classes and was already a Reiki Master, but going through massage school was so profound.

I felt that I had finally found where I belonged and what my purpose was. Having been attuned to Reiki before massage school was immeasurably helpful and I learned so much about myself and my abilities and how I could be of service to people.

After graduating from massage school, I worked at a few different places from spas to healing centers and chiropractic offices. Each place taught me so much. My specialty was deep tissue massage. I worked primarily with people who had chronic pain in order to help them function, as well as, pre and post-surgery. I gained a few specializations including Cupping and Upper Body Medical Massage, as well as studying Herbalism.

About 2015, I opened my own business in Nashville. I was blessed to have a successful massage practice and also teach massage. At this point, I did not really offer Reiki or Intuitive Readings. I was a very technical therapist, and while I used my intuition backed by my knowledge of the human body to help my clients, I didn’t want to be seen as flaky or not serious.

I had worked very hard to have an impeccable reputation in my field. However, after opening my own business, I kept feeling a pull or really a push to offer Reiki sessions. This really opened the door to eventually offering Intuitive Readings and teaching classes on Energy.

After living in the Nashville area for about 12 years I was ready for a change. I had been a massage therapist for about 7 years at that point I was getting burned out with that too. So, in 2017, I relocated to Memphis. It was my plan to only offer Energy Therapy and Readings when I moved here, but I soon went back to doing massage as I needed to support my family.

Now, after 5 years, I am able to offer Energy Therapy Intuitive Readings, and Spiritual Coaching. I retired my massage license and focus on teaching spirituality, self-empowerment, and offering readings and guidance. It was also after moving to Memphis that I really started working on music as well. I started writing more, recording myself, and working on getting better.

A few years later, I started singing with my church choir. I had always wanted to sing and pursue music but had terrible stage fright. After working with the choir, and taking a few voice lessons I lost my stage fright and was able to make music a bigger part of my life. I joined The Memphis Connectors in 2021 and am now their lead singer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road. Ha! After leaving massage therapy, I had a major identity crisis. I felt so lost. I had wrapped up so much of who I was in that title, that I had a really difficult time figuring out what direction to go in, or even how to feel about it.

I have also dealt with anxiety and depression for most of my life. I hit a particularly low point about two years ago where my depression and anxiety were so severe that I was not able to function. After talking it over with my Psychiatrist I decided to try medication to help alleviate some of my symptoms. While everyone has to find their own way, my life has improved drastically after getting on medication.

I truly believe I would not be able to do all of the things I enjoy now, like being in a band and putting myself out there musically, as well as being able to offer spiritual guidance and reading for my clients if I had not found the right combination of therapy and medication.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In a lot of ways, I am a “Jill” of all trades. I have done and still do a little bit of everything.

Primarily though, I am an educator. Just as when I was a massage therapist and taught my clients about their bodies, I now teach my clients about their energetic bodies. I help guide them to see themselves as a whole, beautiful, and capable and how to care for and understand themselves better.

I am known for being highly intuitive and empathic. For being a safe space for people to come and talk about what is going on in their lives, and their emotions without any judgment. For guiding my clients to find their own answers and helping them find clarity and comfort in difficult situations.

I am honored to do this work and most proud of my clients. I love seeing them feel better and get healthier emotionally and energetically because of the work we have done together.

I think what sets me apart from others is that I am so focused and I am constantly learning in order to help more people. I am compassionate but also very no-nonsense. I tell you what you need to hear, not necessarily what you want to hear.

I give everyone homework to do because it is my goal that my clients do not become dependent on me. I am here to guide and help in healing because only you can heal yourself. You have to want it, and you have to do the work. There are no shortcuts.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Above all, I hope what people take away from this, is how incredibly important and beautiful it is to be your authentic self.

You owe yourself and the world your gifts. We all have a different path to travel, so don’t compare yourselves to others.
