Meet Benjamin Naylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Naylor.

Hi Benjamin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I received my first camera in December of 2018. Before that, I would borrow my cousin’s camera whenever I got the chance. Once I got the camera I began photographing as much as I could. I started taking pictures of things that were around me: livestock and nature, but soon it shifted to sports.

Under the guidance of my cousin, Oscar Esquivius, I started taking pictures of my local high school’s basketball team. From their own, I knew that sports photography was a passion of mine. Once football season came around I found my way onto the field and began capturing any action that I could.

Soon the Brownsville Press, the local newspaper in Haywood County (my home area) reached out to me and asked If I would like to start covering sports for them. I happily obliged and continued to craft my skills. After a couple of years of working for the Brownsville Press, I started school at the University of Memphis. I am currently studying journalism with a focus on Creative Mass Media.

I am currently still running my own Business, NW Media, and am trying to get my work out to as many people as I can. I have also started working with a local production company here in Memphis as well as a local high school. My grandmother really gave me a starting passion for photography.

She always has her little point-and-shoot camera with her during a family event and made sure to capture pictures of all the family members who were there. Her inspiration is the reason I started photography and is also why I honor her in my business name, NW Media.

The W represents her last name, White, while the N represents my last name, Naylor.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Lord has blessed my business with smooth seas so far.

I have had multiple opportunities come out of nowhere that has been so crucial to a business. I have also made many connections with people who I have just met by chance. If anything, the only “struggle” so far has been affording gear.

Photography gear is not cheap, but I have been blessed with supportive parents who have helped me manage my money in an effective way as well as provided other types of support as they could.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Currently, I focus my talents on sports photography and videography. I grew up playing sports so now that I am older, I am able to still stay a part of the things I love.

I was born and raised in Haywood County (currently living in Memphis for school) and I have always made sure to use my God-given skills to give back to my community. The thing I’m most proud of and what sets me apart from others is the same thing, my work ethic.

I am always down to work and push through any hardship that may come up. God has proven to me that there will always be a way out of a hard time and He has given me the mindset to overcome those times.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something people who know my brand may be surprised to know about me is that I have only been in this field for 3 years.

I have learned so much in these last couple of years that has really helped me to grow my business at an exponential rate.
