Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaniki Brown.
Hi Shaniki, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hi! I am Shaniki Brown but everybody calls me Nikki! I am a 41-year-old Breast Cancer Survivor of five years. Before I became an entrepreneur, I worked in childcare and loved it.
But in 2014 when I became the proud foster mother of Stanlee Brown, whom I have adopted in 2019, I couldn’t devote myself to his needs and work needs. Needless to say, Stanlee won! Becoming a parent has been one of the most rewarding things in my entire life.
Out of boredom and having extra time on my hands, I started watching crafting videos. Then, I purchased a circuit machine and from there, orders started pouring in. My passion started with completing favors for my family and friends.
As time passed, my business mentor David Richmond of Guerilla Media challenged me to open my own business. Sunshine Designs Est. 1980! I accepted the challenge and our doors have been open since that time. Thank you David for the push! Once my business began to operate, I started attending business seminars and learning to operate my business successfully. Being a small business owner has changed my life tremendously.
It is given me the opportunity to network with major organizations such as the University of Memphis; which was the first post-secondary school to place a large order with Sunshine Design Est. 1980 as well as have an ongoing business relationship with us. We have had the opportunity to be a vendor at major events such as the Cooper-Young Festival and many others.
Also, I have partnered with several companies such as Fast Delivery 901, My Scented Flames, and B.Dot Graphic and Designs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road so far has been filled with major highs and pitfalls. It’s been bumpy, to say the least.
There have been times when I wanted to just give up and get a job. And just then, multiple orders start pouring in and I find myself overwhelmed! The major challenge of being a crafter is there is a lot of worthy competition.
Learning more daily, advertising my skills, and giving exceptional customer service keep Sunshine Designs Est. 1980 going strong. Thanks to my faith in God and willingness to keep going, everything always works out.
