Rising Stars: Meet J’von Toles

Today we’d like to introduce you to J’von Toles.

Hi J’von, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started drawing when I was 3 and I was born and raised in Memphis.

I progress all throughout my life and I tell myself that I don’t have a limit, ceiling, or a cap. I graduated from the Memphis Academy of science and engineering (2011), Southwest Tennessee Community College (2015), and MTSU (2018). I went through some tough times in school like being told that I wasn’t good enough to do art or that my art is not what we are looking for.

One time my teacher literally failed me out of Graphic Design and I was told that my work never met up to their expectations unless I re-took the class. I was depressed but I knew I had to leave MTSU, because of how unfit and unpleasing, I was to my other peers and my teacher (except for other black people, my painting and sculpting teacher). I mean this was what to be expected being around people who don’t like you for either the work you put in.

So I graduated and got away from Murfreesboro and MTSU. When I came back to Memphis, I started back on my artwork. I work around the clock perfecting it and trying to get as many commissions as I could plus working at amazon. I usually have either an art book, or I draw on my phone, computer, at work, in restaurants, at family and friends’ houses, or taking a break.

I try to never make an excuse for myself not to do artwork or get commissions done. I try each day that God gives me breath and I enjoy it. I have a wife and 2 kids and I’m making sure that they will have a valuable future. I believe that dreams can become real when you push yourself each day that you live.

So now people are following me, commissions are coming in, and I have rivals in the art that challenge me each day as I progress. I love being in Memphis because it is my home and I’ll put my city on the map with my artwork as much as I can.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Sadly no. As I said before, I’ve been in situations where a whole class didn’t like me, where people kept making me angry, and where my own friends or people didn’t want to support me. Also, being a diabetic due to stress.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
