Rising Stars: Meet Khalia Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalia Mitchell.

Hi Khalia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I taught myself how to braid hair on my “my little pony” horse when I was younger, around 4/5 years old & as I grew older I used to always do my bratz dolls hair lol. I started braiding for money when I was a junior/senior in high school. I wanted the extra money & more practice. I always knew that doing hair was my passion. I continued doing hair once I got to college, I focused on braids & wig installs.

I recently just got into doing locs about a year ago. Ever since I started working in a shop and doing hair more, my passion for locs just grew & grew. Now, I rarely do braids, I focus on locs & men’s natural hairstyles. In the future, I plan to start cutting hair as well as opening my own salon in a few years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a hairstylist definitely has its ups & downs. One day I might have 1 client, and the next day I’ll have 4… both days I made money. Slow days are better than none, I’m grateful for all my clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed braider/loctician. I specialize in natural hair & weave styles. I’m known for crisp parts & neat work! I can spot my workout anywhere. I’m most proud of the progress I’ve made over the span of 6 months. My personality sets me apart from others.
