Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Atkins.
Hi Kimberly, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My name is Dr. Kimberly Atkins, EdD, LCSW I am a lifelong resident of Memphis, Tennessee. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from the University of Memphis. While receiving my Master of Science Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee, I interned for the Veterans Administration Hospital and Community Behavioral Health. In 2015, I earned a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University.
I decided to go back to school when my oldest son was diagnosed with sickle cell disease. I met a compassionate social worker who helped me get through my depression and anxiety that was associated with the knowledge of sickle cell disease and postpartum depression.
That experience change my life and I learned how to help others as others have helped me. I am now the owner and CEO of Mind Renewals Psychological Counseling Services. We provide mental counseling to individuals, teenagers, adults, and couples. We individuals learn ways to manage life challenges.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been very challenging. Upon graduating from Graduate school, I was an instant single mom raising three small children on my own. All the children were under the age of 5. I felt abandoned, alone, and rejected. Everyone around me was married, happy, and stable. I was obtaining my doctorate part-time at night and working two jobs.
Looking back at that time of my life it was the best thing for me. I was able to devote full time to my children and my school. I was able to increase my self-awareness and the awareness of others. I build an immeasurable about of compassion for others and their struggles. I was able to attending counseling courses for myself. I learned the importance of self-care and care for others simultaneously. I am so grateful for my good and days and not so good days. It taught me how to build empathy, compassion, and love for myself and others.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Dr. Kim Atkins, EdD, LCSW is a clinical social worker specializing in suicide prevention, Alzheimer’s Care, relationship counseling, and career management, as well as in coping skills in both adolescents and adults. I am the owner and CEO of Mind Renewals Counseling Services. She has more than 20 years of counseling experience and is licensed in the state of Tennessee.
I have a combination of professional and personal skills that can help any person tackle an unexpected life crisis, a quality that sets her apart from other counselors in the area. Over the years, I have worked as a managed health care coordinator, lead inpatient hospital therapist, and as a home health/hospice social worker.
I have served on the Women’s Veterans Panel, Hollywood Community Center Annual Thanksgiving Giveaway, and United Way Driving The Dream Provider.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I have learned patience. It took 4 years of undergraduate school, 2 years of graduate school, and another 4 years of doctoral school to complete my educational career. Then I had to obtain the skills and training needed to open my private practice.
I learned that good thing comes to those who wait. Some things take time to mature and manifest. Learning patience taught me to enjoy the journey through life.
