Community Highlights: Meet Mikayla “MK, the Math Guru” Richardson of the Math Korner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla “MK, the Math Guru” Richardson.

Hi Mikayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
theMathKorner began in 2021 during the peak of COVID. I was in the middle of a 14-day “Be Intentional” challenge with my life coach, Brieonna Mays when the idea came to me. At the time, I was a Middle School Math Education major, we were completing classes virtually, and I had family members and friends who all complained about the struggles of virtual learning. As I went through my 14-day challenge one of the daily tasks was to write out a short-term goal.

I can remember scattering ideas all over the page, and nothing stood out like a virtual math tutoring service. I spent so much time planning to make sure I’d covered every corner of starting a new business, but I was hesitant. Then, one day I saw a quote that read, “don’t wait on the RIGHT time, it’ll never come. Do it NOW.” That was my sign. On February 17, 2021, I shared the business with the virtual world, and I haven’t looked back yet. Since 2021, we’ve reached students in 20+ cities across the world from Memphis, TN to Dallas, TX because of our commitment to enhancing mathematical experiences one student at a time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a firm believer in the saying “nothing worth having comes easy,’ and the Math Korner is worth having. In the beginning, I struggled with balance; as a full-time student.

As a full-time associate, a full time student, and a new business owner, prioritizing time was one of the most challenging struggles on the road to building my own brand. Trusting my creative self to navigate through the world of virtual learning is an ongoing journey. Despite the difficulties, seeing students’ process is the greatest reward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about the Math Korner?
The Math Korner is an online math tutoring service available wherever you are. I am the mastermind of this brand; I own and operate everyday activities in the Math Korner. We specialize in any mathematical enhancements for students grades Kindergarten to 12th grade. We meet students wherever they are in their math journey and help them reach their goals whether that is a better understanding of the subject, better ACT scores, or just getting ahead with grade-level expectations.

What sets us apart from other Math tutoring businesses is our accessibility, the one-on-one low-stress environments we create to boost students’ confidence with Math, and the “student specific”curriculum we create to suit the needs of the child. I am most proud of our growth and retention; not only are we adding more students to our family, but our students are also returning on a consistent basis which yields the best results.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
As the Math Korner continues to grow, I have hopes that our virtual business will reach students across our country.

Within the next ten years, I see the Math Korner as a franchise available both virtually and in-person. One part of the vision that will remain the same regardless of our business setting is the one-to-one student-to-tutor ratio. In intimate learning environments, students are more likely to actively participate, ask for assistance, and gain a better sense of understanding.
