Today we’d like to introduce you to Abigayle Sartain
Abigayle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up raising and showing Duroc pigs. When my husband and I got married in 2019, I had a few gilts and sows plus we wanted to add another breed to our farm. We decided to add Spots.
Today we continue to raise, show, and sell pigs with our two children.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As with any farming operation there many ups and downs. Market prices for inputs are constantly increasing, sicknesses, unexpected repairs, and lack of support are all things that we have faced.
We’ve been impressed with Sartain Farm, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Sartain Farm, our focus is raising Spot and Duroc pigs. What sets us apart from other breeders in the area is that we select high quality genetics from breeders around the country. We sell to a wide range of customers. We take great pride in raising pigs that are high quality for in-state and out-of-state 4-H and FFA members to exhibit at pig shows. Once a customer buys a showpig from us we like to check in with them periodically to help support them if they have any questions or concerns. Then we try to go watch them compete at the fairs. Our genetics make excellent breeding stock for both beginners and lifelong breeders. This is because we are dedicated to ensuring that our boars and gilts are consistent and functional. Durocs and Spots also make great pork to stock up the freezer with farm fresh pork!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I spent lots of time in the barn. Even to this day when it begins to get dark early in the evenings and starts getting cool, I feel like it’s baby pig season because one of the prime farrowing seasons is December through February. I showed pigs around the country through National Junior Swine Association. In high school and college, I competed in FFA winning both the state and national Swine Entrepreneurship Proficiency. I was very involved in 4-H. I spent lots of afternoons at club meetings and contests. My weekends and summers were spent at pig shows, 4-H retreats and camps, and FFA conventions.
In addition to raising pigs, I loved baking, scrapbooking, and sewing. These are still my favorite pastimes. I was extremely academically inclined. I loved to get good grades throughout my education. This definitely paid off when it came to getting scholarships for college.
