Meet Ayanna Campbell of Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayanna Campbell.

Hi Ayanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The first spark I remember was watching a food documentary post college–noticing that one of the speakers had a masters degree in nutrition. I didn’t know that was possible and was moved by push to consider the healthfulness (or lack thereof) of the standard American diet. I had always wanted to be a physician and decided that nutrition also needed to take a front seat, so I applied to Columbia University’s Masters program. Life happened in a FLASH after that–I moved to NYC from Memphis in 30 days and my journey in nutrition and health began. Halfway through my program, I decided that I cared more about being a liasion between people and science in nutrition and decided to pursue becoming a registered dietitian. I earned my RDN licensure and have been a dietitian since 2021. Concurrently, movement and fitness has always been a part of my life–from competitive dance to recently becoming a Figure bodybuilding champion–linking food, fitness and overall health are the core of who I am. In the past, I struggled to name how my worlds integrate and found great joy in building a business and home for everything I love. IndigoRx was born in 2024–which is a blend of faith, nutrition, fitness, systems, science and soul. I feel like I’ve journeyed so much over the years yet life is just beginning. Charting your own path is an arduous journey, but I’m learning that people are waiting on you to show up in your purpose and my dreams are calling loudly!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, lol! My masters program was geared toward future doctors, dentists and researchers–so I had to return to school in the evenings to gain pre-requisites while I worked as a research assistant. I’ve journeyed through burnout when I returned to Memphis, cultural resistance to dietary suggestion, microaggressions in the workplace, family personal life stressors and the constant pressure to fit in when you know being in a singular place will never fit.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve recently been exploring a new title as an integrative performance dietitian. I am in so many worlds–nutrition, fitness, bodybuilding and my faith is the core part of all of those. I’ve been building my consulting business–IndigoRx–which blends my love for nutrition, fitness, faith, systems, science and the soul. It has been a labor of love as take daily steps to leap toward my dreams and fully serve others blending all of these pieces together. I am most proud of God saving me, my discipline and the tenacity to get up every day to make progress. I believe that my ability to transform anything that I face into data for progress keeps me moving forward and sets me apart. In addition, the hope of hearing “well done my faithful servant” from God lights a fire in me daily.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
First I would suggest prayer and then going to events or places where people you are inspired by may be featured. Also shoot your shot! The worst that could happen is someone say no and even if they did–you’re now on their radar. In the area of networking, research the people and industries you are interested in. Don’t ask for the presence or energy of a person without being prepared.
