Life & Work with Elizabeth Sloas of Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Sloas.

Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started seriously painting and crafting when I was twelve years old. As soon as I realized I had a natural affinity for painting and drawing and writing, that’s when I became an artist. I do think that there is something special about those first few years of honing your craft. That’s when so many people give up, but I believe that the true artists, the true creatives, keep pushing forward.

And that’s what I did. There were several years where I deemed my art a “hobby” and kept it secluded to the four walls of my room. I was an incredibly shy kid and art became how I interacted with the world. It saved me from the echo chamber of my own mind.

Now, years and years later, I am living my childhood dream. I am painting, traveling, and starting a business all intertwined around my art. It is truly a great blessing and I am grateful everyday, no matter how intense and stressful it all gets sometimes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
A smooth road? No, I would not say it has been a smooth road. Sometimes, I feel as if there is no road at all and I am making my own way through a foggy forest, unsure if I am even going in the right direction. But I think it was all worth it in the end.

The most undeniable struggle would have to be my mental health. I struggled with mental health issues all my life and for so long I let them control my life. But, now I use my fear and my anxiety as motivation. I know that fear will always be there, it’s simply a fact. But, now instead of letting fear rule my life, I see it as a challenge. The power you feel when overcoming your own mind is amazing. So, I decided that I will overcome my fears, because I will be damned if I let the fear win.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
While I do consider myself a creator in every sense of the word, my true love is painting. I specialize in landscape and portraiture paintings and mainly work in oils. I create small to medium sized works and oftentimes my work is inspired by my travels, everyday life, and art history. I am most proud of my landscapes and find them to be a perfect way to immortalize my own travels. I put a lot of thought and time into my artwork and hope that all of the effort I put into my paintings shows.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe that there is always a positive spin you can add to any situation. So, in my mind all luck is good in my life, nothing is bad. There are times of course where I don’t feel that way in the moment, but I do try to keep the mindset of, everything is lucky.
