Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Bell.
Hi Jill , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a teenager I always loved art, and always found a way to use my creativity. When I went to college and began nursing school, I didn’t have time to have create, so painting took a very long hiatus. In 2011 our fourth baby girl, Allie was born sleeping. For several years after her passing, I found myself needing something for myself that would help me heal. Art has always been therapeutic for me, and in 2015 I decided to create a small angel piece in memory of Allie. This piece led to many others and to my surprise I had people wanting to purchase my art. A small piece created for myself at my kitchen table, turned into over 10 years of creating. Today I have a social media following that continues to grow, a website where I share and sell my work, as well as a studio at home. My home studio has become a place where I not only work but also host workshops and pop-up events. These events are a time for ladies to gather and feel a sense of community while learning something new. I tell people “in real life” I am a nurse, and an artist in my spare time. Both have played a role in bringing me where I am today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think any road is always smooth, but when I started painting again it was something I did for myself so I didn’t feel any pressure, things felt easy. But as I started sharing more of my work I struggled with the fear that no one would connect with my art. Being self taught, I found myself questioning whether I was using correct technique, and worried “real artists” were looking at my pieces and finding things that didn’t follow the rules. I guess as my business grew, so did my confidence. I paint what makes me happy, and have let go of worrying about what others think. I am fortunate to have amazing family and friends that help me through the obstacles that have come my way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I primarily create using acrylics and watercolor but love adding various mediums to my work. I have yet to really find my niche but I would say I am most known for my abstract pieces and landscapes. I grew up on a dairy farm in Middle Tn so I love painting the beautiful fields and sunsets that remind me of my childhood.
I spent 10 years as a NICU nurse and now work in pediatrics. I have always loved children and my own experience with infant loss led me to finding a way to help others through my story. I enjoy partnering with our local Heaven’s Cradle bereavement group here in Jackson to create pieces for families who are going through losing a child. I am most proud of my work that hangs in the bereavement room at the hospital. This piece, a large abstract cross, was my way of sharing Allie’s memory with others and hopefully bringing comfort to those walking the same path we walked several years ago. I have always believed that God gives us gifts, and those gifts are meant to bless others. I am thankful I can share my gift.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I am fortunate to have a network of artists and small business owners that help each other navigate the business side of my journey. When my hobby turned into a business, I was pretty clueless on many aspects of that. Through social media I have connected with several artists who share resources, and experiences. I have always felt community over competition is always best, and encourage anyone looking to start using their talents to connect with other creators. Become involved in your community and participate in community events. Supporting others who share your same passion will help you learn.
