Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaina Ramsey.
Hi Shaina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey has taken a few unexpected turns, but each chapter has led naturally to the next. For more than a decade, I worked as a hair and makeup artist, building my own brand and getting to be part of some really special moments for people. Over time, I found myself drawn more and more to health and wellness, and the science behind what makes us who we are. That curiosity eventually pulled me back to school to study biology and psychology with a neuroscience concentration. As a mom returning to college in my thirties, this transition has really pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it’s also reminded me that it’s never too late to start a new chapter. Choosing Memphis feels like part of that same new beginning. Memphis is such a special city, and as everything aligned, I couldn’t deny that this is exactly where I was supposed to be. It is giving me space to grow, build a new community, imagine what comes next, and maybe encourage others who are thinking about starting over too.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My path to higher education hasn’t been a straight line. I first tried college right after high school and gave it another shot when my children were younger, but I didn’t yet have a clear direction. Neither time was the right season for me to finish.
In the time since, I built a successful beauty brand, traveled the world for clients, worked with high-profile and celebrity clients, founded a nonprofit that provided hygiene products and haircuts to underserved communities, and owned a salon. When I felt called to change directions and pursue biology, it was difficult to let go of something I had worked so hard to build. However, I eventually reached a point where I couldn’t deny that this was the path laid out for me.
Now that my children are older, I am returning to college with a clear sense of purpose. As they say, the third time’s a charm.
We’ve been impressed with Shaina Ramsey @shainaramseybeauty, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
For years, I built my career as a hair and makeup artist. I specialize in natural textures and makeup that enhances rather than masks, always with an emphasis on clean ingredients and the health of skin and hair. I’m most proud of building that brand from the ground up through trial and error, learning as I went. A major shift came during my surrogacy journey when the extensive pre-testing made me see how every choice, even down to products, is interconnected. That experience nudged me to look at beauty and wellness from the inside out. It changed how I thought about wellness and led me back to school to study biology, psychology, and neuroscience. Now, I’m working toward a future in health, and finding ways to bring together beauty, health, and helping people feel cared for inside and out. I’m excited to build this next chapter in Memphis.
How do you think about luck?
I’ve always felt that what others might call luck has felt more like favor and answered prayers in my life. Some of the biggest opportunities showed up before I felt ready. I learned to trust myself enough to take them. In my beauty career, I’d set one goal, reach it, and somehow the next opportunity appeared even when I didn’t have the most experience. Now, as I transition into biology and health, I don’t know every step. I trust doors will open and that I’ll recognize them. They’ve often proved to me that I was more capable than I realized.
