Today we’d like to introduce you to Latarah Spearman.
Hi Latarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At the age of 13, I started doing family members’ hair. I started taking pictures of it and posting them on social media. People would contact me to do their hair and then would tell other people about me and what I could do. I’ve always wanted to do hair as a child and became in love with how many ways I could style locs. I knew how to do all types of hairstyles but it was just something more enjoyable with locs. I felt free to express my creativity. I feel challenged and more at peace.
As I got older and more educated, I started learning techniques on how to fix locs when they became damaged. I went through trial and error and luckily I had some great clients who understood I was learning because I told them before Service. As years passed, I gained more education, and more clients. I mastered the techniques of restoring locs and gained the name “LocGod”. I worked in the medical field and learned more about the human body, and how stress and medications can effect your hair.
During that time, my sister and aunt became diagnosed with breast cancer and started to lose their hair. I became interested in hair oils and how I could take what I’ve learned in the medical field and apply it to making my own hair growth oils. Another trial and error until I found what worked. I used my aunt and sister as my testers while going through chemotherapy. And successfully my oil assisted with their hair growth. I bottled it, took pictures of weekly growth and started selling to the public. I later decided I wanted my own salon but thought I wasn’t smart enough to do it. I said I’ll own a salon as a joke because I felt it was too big of a dream. But words are powerful. 4 years later, I opened my first salon in a mall. After the lease was up I built my second salon on a busy street. Business has been great, products are selling and I’m able to help other stylists advance their techniques, create products and how to teach them how to run a salon in hopes of them opening their own.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There has been some difficult moments but looking back at them now… it has made me do things differently, be more responsible, makes me pay closer attention and taught me to create rules for my business, contracts and learn how to be more organized. I’ve experienced someone stealing my ideas, stealing my business name, I’ve hired people for jobs and they ran off with payments.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am “The LOCGOD”. I am a Licensed Natural Hairstylist, a LocSpecialist, USTI/AMCA Certified Hair Loss Practitioner, an instructor, a Mentor..and Owner of “Art of Locs by LocGod “ natural hair salon. I have over 10 years of experience with natural hair, 8 years in the medical field where I worked with cancer patients, patients who battle with health issues including high blood pressure, kidney and thyroid, causing stress and hair loss. These doctors educated me on the “Why” medicine and health affects the hair. This helped me to create “Green Tea for Hair” to help with extreme hair growth. I recently stepped down from normal Loc maintenance to solely specialize in Hair loss and Scalp treatments, Permanent Loc Extensions, Loc repairs, Loc Foundation Reconstruction and All styles of Faux Locs.
All other services can be done by a very talented team of stylists within the salon
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’m an empath. My clients and customers easily find security within me to share their most deepest thoughts, or emotional stories, or come to me vulnerable knowing I can help them build confidence, find solutions and show them I’m determined to fix their insecurities hair-wise. My clients are comfortable with me and my customers are drawn to my energy.
