Community Highlights: Meet Keturah Shelton of My Calling Therapy Service, Paz Wellness and Spa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keturah Shelton.

Hi Keturah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
A young woman who moved from a small town in Mississippi to Tennessee in 1989 at the age of 5. I am the youngest of 5 children, raised in the country by my wonderful late parents who put me on a game about working, how to work smart with money. My dream was wanting to become a chef. All schools across the nation mailed me to attend all because I knew how to cook and cooking was my thing in school. I started cooking at the age of 9 with my mother and father. We also had an acre garden which we maintain along with my father being a hunting man, so yes I cooked food of what he hunted growing up in Tipton County.

Graduated In 2002, afterwards come to find out from my eye doctor that I am not able to attend culinary school or have a profession as a chef (all because I wanted to be over-fire when I cook) to find out I had an eye disease which can be more harmful if I have gotten into the field. Fast forward…..

I Moved to Memphis in 2008 and that is where I have become a massage therapist. I still was doubting myself as a therapist because it was not my dream, being a chef was my dream, but massaging is MyCalling. Which in 2018 is what I have named my business MyCalling Therapy Services, which I feel god has called me to help people with their bodily needs.

Now here in 2021 Evita J. And I have a spa together which is called Paz Wellness Spa as I am co-owner. Everything is just gold when making these decisions and I am very astounded to be Owner of Mycalling Therapy services and Co-owner of Paz Wellness Spa and having a wonderful business partner and team. Me and Evita J. met in 2012 and did not have a clue we both were in the health and beauty field. So, this happened, I promise I do not regret going into business with a phenomenal individual. Also, Candace Holyfield, who has helped many black beauty and health professionals with the strategy of running a spa. I do thank her for this as well as this opportunity of listening to her and to expedite this gift and how to be smart as a business woman.

Before this decision, I wanted to step it up a notch in my business where I do a lot of Post-op Care/Manual lymphatic drainage.

This year, I stepped away from working for a company in March and now I am working on my own, I love it so much. Looking back as a young girl wanting to be a chef, I am a master massage therapist who is talented and educating the world on the importance of bodies.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh no, it has not been a smooth road. Opportunities always come to mind, but they do not happen overnight. It takes time and you will be successful, which I am now.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about My Calling Therapy Service, Paz Wellness Spa?
What people should know about both businesses, we are a health and beauty spa. Here in our spa, we do Post-Op Care (manual lymphatic massage and non-invasive treatments), we also specialize in therapeutic massages, waxing, facials, etc. I am known for being one of the best post-op manual lymphatic drainage specialists in the Memphis area. What sets me apart from others is I love educating about manual lymphatic drainge.

I am a health professional, which is what a massage therapist is, who just does massages on my clients and educates them. I will continue to stay in my scope of practice and educate my clients on the benefits of massage of many modalities. My most proud brand-wise is helping people reduce water weight and swelling, which I was skeptical to-do, Manual Lymphatic Drainage. I want readers to know about my brand and our spa is the place you want to come and relax from a busy life that you may have.

Trust us to take care of your needs when it comes to skincare, relaxation, and waxing. We are your number 1 go-to spa; we have the fixings you need for your bodily care.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
The luck I have in this role is excellence. You may feel sometimes you are going backward, but have to remember to never give up and keep going. It’s not the end of the world. Things happen, keep pushing when bad luck happens.

Things I love to do.

Spending time with family ( I love me and my sibling’s bond and all of my nieces and nephews) and friends, church, helping people and educating people. I love nature, parks and love to exercise. Oh I forgot to mention, I love to travel. When my parents were living, that is all we did. As an adult, I was letting life go by, I said to myself let me start this traveling back up and I did and loving it.

What made me become my profession was when I was told about my eye vision being possibly damaged due to wanting to be a chef, the route as a massage therapist grew on me. I absolutely love what I do. At the age of 12, my late father was sick with cancer and use to ask me to massage his legs of low protein in them and aches. He told me, ‘Little girl, you will be a great massage therapist. “ In My future, I didn’t have a clue this is where I would be and realized at the age of 12, my late father was my first client. 🙂
