Meet Caleb Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb Nelson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello, my name is Caleb Nelson, I am 21 years old, and I am born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. I have been using cameras since 2011 and started off just making fun videos with friends. Quickly my passion for cameras started to grow. In 2016 I got my first DSLR and started taking pictures right away and working on developing my style. In 2018 I was starting to find my style and aesthetic that I liked. 2018 was the year I was starting to make money as a photographer, but that wasn’t the main focus. I wanted to just make art and be known as an artist. In September of 2019 I posted a tiktok that went viral and help more people start to find my work. This was very eye opening to me and motivated me to work on my art even more. In 2020 I became I very big fan of masks, maybe because of Covid, but masks that would cover your entire head. These types of masks combine with my moody tones is the style that I wanted to be mine and known for. I started doing photoshoots and videos of my mask stuff that started to go viral on both Instagram and tiktok. I currently stand at 38k followers on Instagram and 850k followers on tiktok. In 2021 I became financially stable because of photography because of social media and paid photoshoots, but I don’t post much of that type of work. I will continue to have an interest in mask and will continue to work with them, but also mess around with new ideas and styles.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think every artist struggles with, “how can I make money off of this?” Starting off being a photographer I was making no money and my family and friends seeing that they thought it would always be like that and I couldn’t make this into a living. I of course had the support of my family and friends but they wanted me to have other options open. Thankfully I am in a good position of where I do make money as a photographer and can be financially stable.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a photographer/videographer. I specialize in creative photography. I am known for using masks in my photography. I am most proud of where I am today as an artist and photographer, it had been a long 8 years of doing photography. I think a lot sets me apart from others. I think my style of moody photography with masks is very different from what others do. My compositions like lighting, location, and what my models wear sets me apart from others. My editing and how I tweak certain colors and make the viewer focus on a certain area of the image sets me apart from others.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think I can see myself as a more established and well-known artist. I plan on still working on my style and craft and continuing to produce works of art. I will continue to take advantage of social media to help me grow and to help me financially. I hope to make trends and make my own style.
