Exploring Life & Business with Scarlett Hunter of Annointed Hands Homecare

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scarlett Hunter.

Hi Scarlett, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all begin when I was a child. My mother worked for the Forrest City, AR health department as a home health care assistant. At that time, my father had partial custody that insisted that me and my younger brother visit with his family every other weekend.

I am my parent’s only daughter and the eldest. On some weekdays and weekends, I got to attend some of the homecare visits with my mom, when I wasn’t in school. I’m from a small town. Where everybody knows everybody. Both of my grandmothers’ ranked as mothers of their churches. I got well acquainted with the elders in the community due to my family.

As a child, I loved to play outside. I would convince my brother and cousins if they visited the elders with me that I would pay them some of my allowances and that they could ride the elevator in the senior citizen building. It worked until the seniors complained of children playing in the elevator.

By the age of 21, I was married with three children. In 2001, I moved to Pontiac, MI there I worked in an Alzheimer’s home in Auburn Hills, MI a direct care assistant. All good things come to an end. Immediately after I obtain my Certified Nursing Assistant Certification and From there my nursing journey began.

I worked as a CNA in Michigan for well over five years before moving back to the south to be closer to my family. I never thought of becoming a business owner. Life happened my dad passed away in 2013 prior to his passing away, I lose my husband/children’s father in 2008. My grandmother became ill I assisted in her care and at that point, I became PRN at my job.

My best friend owns an online clothing store “Maddi J’s closet”. As life went on, I told her that I wanted to start a home care agency. She was very encouraging she said, “GO FOR IT, FRIEND”. It still seemed very far-fetched. One day, I decided with little to no money that I can do it.

I put one foot in front of the other. It was days that I wanted to give it all up. But, I could hear my dad’s voice telling me never to give up and continue to fight. I am forever grateful for his survival skills and also his life teachings. My dad ran a Peach farm in Arkansas. Growing up, he hired and managed different people from all races. Being raised around my dad I developed an entrepreneurial spirit.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The struggles along the way were being a single mother with three children having to provide for them alone and also maintain a business. That alone can be very challenging. All my children are close in age. Obtaining working business capital.

Life has taught me, everybody, won’t support your hopes in dreams therefore you have to get it done yourself. A person has to be their own number, one supporter. I have to believe in myself even when others don’t.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love everything about our city. I meet wonderful people on the daily basis rather it’s networking or out doing an assessment. Memphis is a wonderful place in spite of all the things in the media. If you can live here you can live anywhere.

However, I would love to see a reduction in the crime rate. My goal is to bring humanity back. Provide jobs and services to the community.
