Meet Prep Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Prep Curry.

Hi Prep, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I learned to sew by watching YouTube. My mother pretty much bet me that I wouldn’t take it seriously and learn how to sew. She paid for two sewing classes at Hancock Fabrics in 2010. Eleven years later, here we are.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and I’ve faced many obstacles along the way. Before I moved to California, I definitely made money in Memphis, my hometown. Eight months after arriving in California, I became homeless.

Since my relocation to California, I have moved 32 times. I slept in motels, hotels, my car for months at a time, and several people’s couches. It’s definitely been a faith walk for sure.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known for my design style with how I make clothing. It’s unique. I sew clothing from scratch, yes, but my clothes tell a story. I use florals in the representation of me being a changed man.

A flower in my eyes is the only thing you can move from one place to another, and with the right love, the flower will blossom. That’s the meaning of Prep Curry clothing.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t chase advice from so many people. We lose so much time waiting on others to tell us how to do everything. I went from calling a lot of people to help me learn how to sew to watching YouTube and figuring it out on my own.

There’s no right way to do things. You have to find your way. In my eyes, everyone needs to make mistakes because it helps you know what not to do. Mistakes sharpen your talent and business sense.
