Conversations with Dr. Callie Talley and Trent Talley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Callie Talley and Trent Talley. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Dr. Callie Talley RN, DNP, and Trent Talley have grown up in NEA and wanted to add to their community. Callie, a long-time healthcare professional with a particular interest in Obesity Management has always wanted to be able to offer exercise and nutrition training outside of the hospital. Trent, a Veteran and local Street Crimes Investigator and SWAT Operator with the PD wanted to give more to his team, to help prepare his fellow officers to protect and serve to the best of their ability.

When we discussed opening a gym, we immediately began discussing our goals. We had no intentions of being just another gym. We wanted to build an unmatched training experience at a competitive price. Strength and Conditioning training alone just aren’t enough in our eyes, so we reached out to an amazing leader and instructor to help add the BJJ to our program as well. Functional Fitness will lead you to a strong, fit, and healthy lifestyle. BJJ will build your endurance and likely save your life if you ever have to utilize it in the street.

In early 2018, owner Trent Talley was involved in an altercation on duty, it was a fight that lasted several minutes with a dangerous and aggressive suspect. Thankfully, he came out with only a concussion and a ruptured hand tendon, the suspect was arrested and returned to prison. Trent chalks up that win to his extra training outside of work. He was consistently going to BJJ classes and working on his strength training. Other officers joined in on BJJ training after hearing Trent’s story and we wanted to continue to grow BJJ training and practice with as many officers as possible.

However BJJ can be expensive (typically $100/mo in this area) and in case y’all don’t know, a cop salary isn’t that impressive. We wanted to build a program that was affordable to officers and citizens that want to build a better lifestyle and protect themselves. Membership at our gym will include access to functional fitness AND BJJ for ONE price with a discount offered to LEO, Fire, EMS, and Military.

We are confident our prices for both will be incredibly competitive to similar options in this region. Every cop, firefighter, paramedic, EMT, solider, and citizen has a story, they have something to live for, something to fight for.
We’re here to help make sure you make it home healthy and safe. We are Griffin Training Center.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We opened GTC in the middle of a pandemic. Nothing was easy. We had a hard time getting supplies. Once our doors were open, we struggled to market and get members. Once we had members, we struggled to have enough coaches to teach everyone and then maintain members.

A year and a half in, and we are finally at a place where we have a steady amount of members, enough staff to coach all our classes, and plenty of equipment. We are looking forward to staying ahead of the struggles and continuing to grow.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Callie is a full-time ER Director. She spent 10 years on the floor as an ER Nurse across the staff and now leads a local ER. She also did her Doctoral dissertation on Obesity Management; her goal is to one day run a Gym/Clinic complex to merge healthcare with lifestyle choices. Callie has won a Daisy Award and graduated at the top of each of her nursing classes.

Trent is a US Army Veteran and current Street Crimes Investigator and SWAT Operator. He spends a lot of his free time attending classes to help him learn more about law enforcement and better prepare him to lead his fellow officers to protect and serve. Trent has been a 4-time Officer of the Month and had been awarded multiple Life Saver awards for his actions in the field.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Be patient and trust the process. We wanted to see immediate results. Be we learned, just like in your journey to health, results don’t happen overnight.
