Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Camp.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When the pandemic started I was working at the hospital in the emergency room and I was so unhappy. I kept watching all these small businesses on TikTok take off and had always wanted to learn to do something that I could turn into a business. I eventually left the hospital and started a new job that wasn’t as emotionally trying and time-consuming.
I started my business as Happy Campers Candles and was only making candles for about a year and then transitioned to Happy Campers Company in dreams to one day be a gift shop. Everything I make I learned from youtube or Tik Tok. Making candles, soaps, chapsticks, knitting blankets, and making shirts was thanks to the internet.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a mixture of being smooth and not. The business aspect of it has been so smooth, but when your life gets in the way of business, it makes it a little difficult. Changing majors in college, switching jobs, and trying to be there with family didn’t always make it the easiest, but everyone was so supportive and made it an easy road.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I hand make everything that I sell. Knitting the blankets, making the soy candles, the natural soaps, and all the other things. I am most proud of all of it.
I believe the song that sets me apart from others with my business is being creative and learning how to do all these things has seriously helped my depression and anxiety and gave me more to live for, rather than feeling like I have nothing to do with my life.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was the kid that talked way too much, but if you personally know me now you would think that is a lie. I was always doing something and had to be with friends or keep busy, but as an adult, I am quiet, laid back, and just like to be at home.
Growing up, my interests were painting, writing, and riding bikes. I loved to do those things!
