Daily Inspiration: Meet Eva Wicks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Wicks.

Hi Eva, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had an appointment with a tattoo artist named DiamondTattz (on Instagram) and we just hit it off, my boyfriend was telling her about how I’m an artist too and was showing her some of my artwork. She mentioned how I could draw really well and if I ever wanted to learn how to tattoo that I could just let her know. Not even a day later, I called her letting her know I was interested and she taught me everything I know. At the beginning, I would sit in on her tattoo sessions and watch, drawing on my own. One day she said that I draw too much and it was time to tattoo, she let me tattoo on her and after that, I bought all my equipment and started practicing on myself and friends.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My first biggest struggle I had to face was people not giving me an opportunity to show what I can do. They didn’t think I was experienced enough or didn’t think my work was good enough because I am a woman. The more tattoos I do the more attention it brings and people are noticing that I can tattoo and that my work is better than a lot of people who are just starting out.

The second biggest struggle I had to face and still do is that majority of the people I have tattooed know me personally.

They think since they are my friends I will be doing free tattoos or charge them $20 or less. Which is not the case, tattooing is not an easy task. There has been plenty of times I’ve had to lay down right after a tattoo due to back pain or headaches from being leaned over for 3 or more hours. My work speaks for itself, and my prices are a reflection of it.

They can pay another artists the amount they say but when it comes to me it’s always “ooh that’s too much” or they question the price like I was not being serious when I said it.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I honestly do a little bit of everything. I first started out in drawing and making prints, then shifted to photography, now I am tattooing. For drawing and photography I specialized in color and attention to detail while also focusing on everyday life, For tattooing, I specialize in line work. I feel as if the outline is the most important part of the tattoo. When starting out I said that I was only going to do black and white tattoos, but here I am doing full color tattoos. The thing I’m most proud of is how far I’ve come. There was a time where I had no idea what I wanted to do career wise. I was just going to school to get my degree in graphic design and had no plan. Now that I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone and tried different aspects of art I have a better idea of which direction I would like to take.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very shy and quiet. I had a couple of friends and was known but I mostly kept to myself. I was interested in art and played sports like basketball, volleyball and soccer.
