Hi Clarence, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hello, I am Clarence Golden Jr. It’s difficult to explain my story because it has so many parts. I guess the reason that I am here is because I have the ideal to bring a NEW sport to the City of Memphis. I am a 42 year old competitive Calisthenics Athlete/ Gym owner. Some people call me a rare breed, an anomaly. There are not that many people my age doing what I do. I am a fitness freak. But, I like it. I am one of the top Heavyweight Calisthenics Athletes in the USA. I have competed in competitions in Chicago, Miami, New York, etc. I am set to compete internationally in London in February 2022.
Controlled Movementz is a new style of Gym to the City of Memphis. Calisthenics is newer sport, that is gaining a lot of attentions across the world. Similar to gymnastics, Calisthenics uses body weight exercises as a form of fitness. You will want to see this sport in person. I am passionate about complete health and fitness, skilled in various methods of weight loss and physique training, with a preference to utilize calisthenics and natural bodyweight techniques to address fitness goals during personal development sessions and while training clientele. I am currently building the first Calisthenics Gym in the Greater Memphis area, which will be tailored towards calisthenics training at every level, from beginner to extreme, with flexible capability to incorporate other training methods such as strength training with free weights, flexibility and stabilization, self defense and various other styles. Our emphasis on holistic health will aide in the ability to help our clients set and reach attainable health and fitness goals, as the focus will be on improving the body’s potential to function at its maximum capacity through practical and functional conditioning techniques, while fueling them with insight and resources geared towards enhancing their mental, spiritual, and nutritional health as well.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggles are just part of the process. I’ve learned from everything. My biggest struggle was not having much guidance. Truthfully, I’m figuring it out as I go. Piecing it together. NO funding, I work hard. I continue to work a full time job while slowly investing in myself. I was denied for all SBA and PPP loans even thought I have a EIN number for my business. I just took it as a sign that I don’t need debt or loans to make it work. Since Calisthenics is not big in Memphis yet, it needs to be showcased before people will appreciate it. I had plans to take my team to the River and Showcase, however, COVID stop this in its tracks. This just gave me more time to plan. I have so many ideas and Memphis will enjoy Controlled Movementz and Calisthenics soon.

Controlled Movement Calisthenics Gym will be having its Grand Opening in January 2022. Controlled Movements will be offering Individual and Group fitness. What does success mean to you?
Success is making a difference. The point is to have a strong community based business or organization, where people love you and appreciate you for the work that you do. Success is when I can support my family and give them a very comfortable like with minimal worries. Waking up everyday knowing that I manifested the life that I dream of success.
