Daily Inspiration: Meet Morgan Myers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Myers.

Hi Morgan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have ALWAYS wanted to do hair. Having said that I started homeschooling in high school, so I could graduate early, and there I was at 17, the youngest in the school starting my dream at The Beauty Institute in Memphis, TN. Fast forward a year later – I graduated and didn’t know “what type of hairstylist I wanted to be”. I just knew I was money hungry and ready to go, so I ended up at a corporate salon. Corporate salons are where a lot of hairdressers get their start. Being a single mom, I knew I needed a steady paycheck. If you ask me, there’s nothing wrong with corporate salons.

I learned so much, including work ethics and time management skills, etc. I ended up staying at the same salon for FOURTEEN YEARS!!! I wouldn’t take those years back for anything as they made me who I am today. Then out of nowhere, I get so sick that I was on a ventilator fighting for my life. When I say fighting y’all, I was fighting and didn’t even know it but I did. I required surgeries that left me with complications and multiple back surgeries which required me to be off work for THREE YEARS. Life was hard. I had doctors telling me I would never do hair again. Did I mention I was also taking care of my dad who had Alzheimer’s by myself and also my son (with the help of his dad)? But like I said earlier I’m a fighter, right? When I was finally able to go back to my corporate job, I managed more for a few months, and then we had the COVID shut down. During that time, I thought hard about booth renting and starting my own business; @Morganmyershairprofessional.

Having said that I found my salon home at Verseau Hair Studio in Collierville, TN. I was terrified since I hadn’t worked for basically three years. I maybe had 15 loyal clients but it was a risk I was willing to take. I started and three days later I got COVID, go figure right? As a result of COVID, I went blind in one eye. After another week’s stay in the fabulous hospital trying to bring my vision back (with no luck), the doctors offered me a long-term disability. Long-term what? Me not behind the chair? Not an option! I pulled out the good old mannequin and started teaching myself how to do hair with one eye and boy was that a challenge. I then and still do take three virtual classes a week and tweak it to work for me. Life is tricky, it will throw challenges at you that you think you will never overcome. I did, however, want to do something that would make me stand out in my field and I have always loved blonding everything so I decided I wanted to become a blonding specialist.

It worked! I learned everything there was to know about blonding. I love it and love the satisfaction of someone sitting in my chair and being satisfied. I think another important lesson for anyone would be self-love and love one another. If you do that and don’t put people down, you then can learn from one another every day. I have learned a lot from some pretty amazing stylists and I aspire and teach as well. Fast forward eight months and not only am I booked out 3 months, but I also branded my business, and to top it off, I won the #2 TOP STYLIST IN MEMPHIS!! I have probably left out so much of my story as I am writing this on what little breaks I get but thank you for reading. I hope this touches someone in some way.

The hair industry has changed my life and my family’s in so many ways that I feel so lucky and blessed. I am here for a reason and if anything, it’s to tell my story to never give up, believe in yourself, and love what you do!! And self-love, loving one another and building each other up. We are all in this industry together, so we should learn from one another!! This one is for you daddy hope you’re looking down and feeling proud! And to my amazing son never give up on your dreams!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I think just like any career there are going to be speed bumps. With hair it is building your clientele, keeping up with trends, learning how to talk with all types of people that sit in your chair each and every day, and most importantly confidence that you can do it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a hairstylist. I do all types of hair you name it I do it. I would say the thing that sets me apart is Blondes. Becoming a Blonde Specialist is not only what I know but something I am very proud of. Knowing the limits on what you can and can’t do when lightening someone’s hair is very important.

Knowing what they use at home even down to what kind of water is so crucial. Let’s face it no matter what you’re doing with hair healthy hair is the BEST HAIR.

How do you think about luck?
Luck that’s a tricky one… Everyone has obstacles in life but, is that bad luck or just life? I say it’s life and how you deal with it. Don’t stay in bed get up and “keep rolling with the punches”. My favorite saying to people when they are down is “ you have to fake a smile to create one”. As far as good luck I think that would just be a reward for all the hard work you have put in.
