Meet Roslyn Marks of East Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roslyn Marks.

Hi Roslyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It really all started as a hobby in college. I started printing t-shirts to match my shoes and eventually started selling t-shirts around campus and didn’t think of it as anything more than that. It wasn’t until after I graduated I decided to take it seriously. The original name was Fly Life and I had a basic logo to go with it but as I thought about what this brand could potentially be, I decided to change the name and logo. I played around with a few names but none of them really gave me that “This the one” feeling. I dug deeper and thought about myself and how clothes make me feel, and that’s when Fly By Nature was born. I went from selling basic T-shirts to full outfits for both men and women, socks, bomber coats, and more! I’m extremely proud of the progress I’ve made and this is just the beginning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not!! We’ve had issues with manufacturers, which caused an almost 2-year delay with products, doubts due to low sales, the struggle of gaining exposure on and off social media, and the normal struggle of trying to figure out what works best for the brand.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an 8-year vet with the Memphis Police Department. I grew up surrounded by Police. I used to listen to my mom and auntie talk about work and I just knew I was going to be a police officer too. I know that sounds cliché but it’s my truth. My passion was and still is trying to save the world. Whether that’s through policing or making someone feel confident in my clothing. What sets me apart from most is my humbleness. I know getting to where I want to be taken more patience than the average person has but I also know when it’s my time it’s my time. I’m very appreciative of where I’m at now, even with the setbacks and doubts.

What matters most to you?
My son! Why?? Because he’s my world. He’s one of the best things that has happened to me. God really knew I needed him.
