Rising Stars: Meet Jenny Bean

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Bean.

Hi Jenny, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I will try to keep it short and sweet! I am a licensed professional for over 10 years and I began my waxing journey in 2015 working for European Wax Center. At the time I just needed a job. My husband had gotten into some trouble and was going to have to be away from me and the kids for a while. When he left, I was unemployed! So I started applying for positions that would allow me to use my license AND balance life as a (single) mom. I was hired to work for European Wax Center in August 2015. I worked there for 2 years and loved it! I loved seeing the instant results, I loved walking the clients through the process when they were nervous, I loved meeting someone new every 15 minutes. I challenged myself to leave absolutely no hair behind so that my client retention would be the best! I had formed relationships with other professionals that were pushing me to do more. So after giving birth in June 2017, and also only being offered to come back from maternity leave to 10 hours a week for EWC, my husband encouraged me to step out on my own even though he was still away. Best leap of faith I ever took- but only after the 2 years of preparation that I had gotten to experience. I started booth renting, passing out my cards, sitting in my space even if I had no one waiting for someone. I would take a client any time of day, whenever they asked for an appointment, I did it. Would even take my kids to wait in the lobby if I had too! I was turning down no appointment, ever! I was building and I was hustling. There were days I made $40 and days I made $100 and I was so excited about both because it was money I had recruited for my business. After working for a year, behind a curtain, my business began to expand beyond what I had envisioned to happen so quickly. I knew nothing about opening a business, running a business, commercial space, etc. But I did know that I had outgrown my current space and there was more to made. Beyond making the money though I was (and am) super passionate about moms being able to provide and balance mom life. It was super important to me that I be able to give another woman the ability to make good money working part-time hours each week so that when she got off work, she wasn’t exhausted, could still be active in her child’s life even if she had no help or support. And I can proudly say that at Wax Therapy we have done just that. My lobby in my new space was empty. Only had chairs and a small table starting out. Walls were freshly painted but they were bare. Rooms had wax tables and supplies but were bare. And as business grew, we were able to put some character into the space. What I realized was this, you can do it. It’s about the service, the quality of the service the consumer is seeking from you and the customer service you provide each and every time; not just on your good days. I reminded myself daily this person could have gone anywhere to spend their money but they chose me. And I want them to choose me again. If I might also add one more thing…I didn’t let myself get stuck in a mindset of pay me what I’m worth and I’m not giving discounts. To this day- we give and give freely……free services, discounts, correct our errors with complimentary services. It pays. Trust me, you will miss no money.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, yes. The biggest struggle has been finding the right software programs, setting up protocols and procedures from scratch, and the biggest of all is finding professionals who want to learn and develop the skillsets we have to offer instead of thinking that after 30 days they are ready to fly on their own.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most proud of being known as your favorite waxer. Which is trademarked by the way! lol

We specialize in leaving absolutely no hair behind in our speed waxing technique. So, we have working women, busy women, and any of our clients out in about 15 minutes leaving her super smooth and no tweezing needed.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I always listen to Dharius Daniels. He is a bible-based resource that focuses my mind and decisions on the right things.

My husband also balances out my emotional mood swings that prevent me from overreacting too. Lol

My current studio manager is the best. She is dedicated and a great, hardworking leader.

But first and foremost if I did not make the decision to trust God through the entire process, good days, bad days, busy days, slow days, and every single day then this journey would cause someone to fold. It is not easy. It is not glamorous as social media portrays. There is so much to it. More than I even know at the moment. You are constantly learning and discovering things you haven’t done that would help and things you haven’t done you are supposed to!
