Life & Work with Shameka Carter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameka Carter.

Hi Shameka, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I was born in South Korea and was raised in Hinesville, GA, and Memphis, TN. I was always a creative child, and so I became more focused on my art during high school. I went on to earn a BFA degree in computer arts from Memphis College of Art, and a MAT degree in art education from the University of Memphis.

I’ve been teaching art for MCS and SCS since 2007. Also, I officially started selling my art, through my e-commerce business last year, Adorn Daily. I create mixed media art, jewelry, and home decor items. My process almost always includes layers of mixed media that depict abstract, metallic, and delicate imagery. I feel that people and creatures have so many layers to them, and they represent so many levels of existence that involve their emotional, physical, social, or spiritual being.

My art depicts those layers that involve those aspects. I choose to portray imagery that intrigues and aesthetically pleases me. These images and objects are shown using layered media and textures, that partially cover or take away the “beauty” of the objects. This process is my perfect combination of portraying the real layers of life, people and objects, the beautiful and the rough. This is my perception of the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Learning the business aspects of having an e-commerce s still tricky to me. I officially started my small business in June of 2020 and there have been many bumps in the road. Trying to build an audience on social media, filing so many types of taxes to shipping off my art, have all been a learning experience! And I’m still learning.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I create paintings that show the beauty of people and nature. I also create whimsical jewelry and small decor items. I make everything from coasters, trays to tables! I love to add different textures with paint, glitter, beads, and resin.

You can see my abstract style throughout my art and my love for metallic elements!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve been blessed to have a supportive family throughout my life, that supports my artistic talents. I’ve joined the Artist’s Link group, which has helped me show my art in different venues throughout the city.

I actually have an exhibit on display in the art education building at Dixon Gallery and Gardens, It’s an interactive exhibit for all to enjoy; it ends March 27th.
