Inspiring Conversations with Christina Watson of Refreshed Skin Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Watson.

Hi Christina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Let’s start by saying I never knew I would ever become a licensed esthetician. But while working my cooperate job, I figured why not make a little more money on the side. I did have the idea in the back of my head but never did the research to go to an esthetics school until 2019. So I Googled and searched for different esthetic schools here in Memphis and came across the Ivy Institute and Gould’s.

I ended up going to the Ivy Institute because I met with the director/owner Mrs. Nat Rawls and loved her personality, the location of the school, and the whole program itself because she offered advanced training where no other school has. She also offered night classes which were great, because I could still work my full-time job as well. I started school in August of 2019 and loved every minute of it! Mrs. Rawls is a licensed esthetician and has been for over 20 years so she is very knowledgeable in the esthetics world, which definitely helped me understand the skin and treatments more and made it a fun learning environment for all of us.

I graduated from her school in August of 2020 and received my license in January 2021. During school, I started my own business called Refreshed Skin Studio in which I specialize in skin treatments and my goal I have with all of my clients is to get their skin to a healthy state so they can get that “glow” we all see in the magazines and on the internet. Since graduating, Mrs. Rawls has become my mentor and I go to her for any advice on skin treatments or questions I may have while being out on my own.

I love that I have someone who knows the industry and wants to see me flourish!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I really only had one struggle during my time in school which was when the pandemic happened. Everything was going great, my family and friends supported me throughout everything until we had to shut down.

I was supposed to be graduating in April but that wasn’t going to happen anymore because we attend class or do any hands-on work which was very disappointing but I knew that everything happens for a reason and a little pushback wasn’t going to stop me from completing my goal of finishing school.

Luckily, my teacher notified us a saying that she can teach through Zoom and we can get the hours we needed that way! My classmates and I were so excited about this! So I ultimately ended up graduating four months later than anticipated and wouldn’t change anything about it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I started my own business while in school called Refreshed Skin Studio. I specialize in skin treatments/facials and my goal is to educate my clients on how to treat their specific skin type to get their skin to a healthy state.

So anything from hyperpigmentation to acne, from light skin to dark skin, I’m knowledgeable in all areas so they can get that “glow” we all love to see! I don’t use any products which harsh chemicals, fragrances, or essential oils because these can irritate the skin and create other problems down the road.

I like my client to come in and relax and enjoy themselves or if they want to talk about anything I’m definitely a listening ear! I want everyone to have a fun and pleasant time with me.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes! I have definitely learned that cleaning and disinfecting everything was important in my business before but it is my NUMBER ONE priority now just to keep everyone safe around me. I have incorporated more Covid-19 protocols into my day-to-day work life.
