Today we’d like to introduce you to Avon Park. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Avon Park was formed by Connor Bankey, Will Crowe, and Will Buehler in the fall of 2018. We first started as an acoustic three-piece, until Will Crowe switched to drums. The summer of 2019 saw Alex Haggard join on bass and in spring 2020 is when Adrian Gascue joined on keyboard.
Avon Park was signed to the University of Memphis’ campus record label in the fall of 2019 with our first EP titled, “Watson” being released in the spring of 2020. After the release of our EP, we were welcomed into the Memphis music scene with open arms being invited to play anywhere and everywhere. When Covid-19 happened, it may have put our live performances on hold, but it didn’t dampen our creative spirit. This leads us to focus all our energy on writing new music.
In the spring of 2020, we went into the studio with our friend, producer, and engineer– Ethan Mayo at Memphis Magnetic Recording Co. to record our new music. As Covid-19 appears to be wrapping up, we’ve decided it’s now time to start working on releasing this music as we can now devote all of our time and efforts to ensure that this new music gets the proper attention it deserves!
Currently, we’re looking to release our first single sometime in March of this year!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I previously mentioned that we were welcomed into our scene with open arms, so yes at first it was a smooth road.
At the same time, it’s not a smooth road as we’re figuring this out ourselves as we go along. One of the struggles that we’ve faced that all bands face is playing shows to empty venues. This can be very discerning, but it humbles us and helps us remember to keep our heads up and not give up!
Another struggle we’ve faced is that we’re working separate jobs to help fund what we’re doing. Us being very busy can be tiresome, but once again we always try and keep our heads up!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our band Avon Park, really just loves to play our own original music.
I think something that we’re known for is the fact that we love to have fun. Every show we play is filled with energy and excitement. I think another thing we’re known for is that we like to jam while we play. On our song, “I Suppose” we take the studio recorded version and add so much more energy and excitement every time we play it live.
Coming to see us play is a completely different experience than listening to our studio-recorded music.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Our biggest resource is the music that surrounds us. The Memphis music scene is such a great atmosphere it really makes us want to get better and better. Blvck Hippie, Lemon’s, Music by Kota, and so many more bands inspire us in so many ways to keep doing what we’re doing.
