Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah Burton.
Hi Savannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Much like most folks in the mental health industry, the unfolding of many events early in my life led me to become a therapist. I always knew I wanted to be a “helper” of some sort and being the friend “that was always resilient in a crisis” steered me in the counseling direction. I got my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and went straight for my Master’s in Counseling, both from the University of Memphis (go Tigers!).
Fast forward ten years and after working in many different areas of mental health including inpatient care, intensive outpatient programming, marketing, and other private practices, I knew I was meant to be doing so much more. I couldn’t put my finger on what that “so much more” exactly was and then the pandemic hit in 2020, which of course put everything to a halt. Telehealth appointments soon became the new normal and it got my wheels turning! In early 2021, I quit two jobs and took the risk of starting my own private practice, out of a shed in my backyard. Yes, you heard that correctly.
I bought a Tuff Shed and converted it into a fully functional office for telehealth appointments. This allowed me to be close to home for my two boys (then ages 5 years & 1 year), husband, and our four-legged first child (my dog Riley). It was always so important to me to start a practice that leads with authenticity. Working in many previous mental health sectors, I have seen where patients are treated like a “number”, and it always bothered me. I also knew that working with women and mothers was a top priority of mine. As someone who suffered from postpartum anxiety after the birth of my first child, this population is so close to my heart.
Knowing this, I decided to get certified in Perinatal Mental Health with Postpartum Support International as a way to continue this journey serving mothers in need. And that’s how MyMemphisTherapist Counseling and Consulting, LLC was born. I am incredibly grateful for the growth over the past year, and I now have two therapists on staff with me who are phenomenal.
While I do still complete my telehealth appointments in the shed here and there, I have a permanent location on W Brookhaven Circle.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ha, is anything worth doing really ever a smooth road? Basically, I quit a 9 am-5 pm job to work 24 hours a day. but I wouldn’t have it any other way. The biggest struggles thus far are honestly taxes (yuck!) and navigating the insurance companies.
Working with my clients is honestly the most joyful & humbling part of my everyday practice.
As you know, we’re big fans of MyMemphisTherapist Counseling & Consulting, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
MyMemphisTherapist Counseling and Consulting is a Memphis-made dynamic mental health therapy practice. MMT can service the needs of many as we specialize in women and maternal mental health issues, but of course, are not limited to treating just those.
Personally, I love working with women’s issues, ADHD, anxiety, perfectionism, boundary setting and often use CBT modalities. MMT also has two other incredible therapists on staff and can offer play therapy for children, CBT therapy, and solutions-focused therapy for a wide range of issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, life’s stressors, and women’s issues.
The other accomplishment I am most recently proud of is the release of my new eBook, “Mama’s Gone Mental”. Being a mom of two boys and also someone who struggled with postpartum anxiety, I have a deep love for helping moms of all kinds. I created a simple eBook (similar to a guide) that has 8 therapeutic strategies I teach to my clients who struggle with stress, anxiety or feeling overwhelmed.
These tools have changed my life and I hope they can take you from feeling frazzled to flourishing! This is great for moms who can’t afford therapy, are short on time, or need a good foundation to start a personal development journey.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I was the definition of cautious as a child. Seriously, my aunt had to pay me $5 to get on the log ride at Opryland as a young girl, no joke. I have changed a lot since that time as I gave grown into taking more and more risks the older I seem to get.
It wasn’t until I started my business that I learned you have to put yourself out there to grow and reach those huge goals that require exposure. And putting yourself out there is SCARY. That’s when fear comes into play, and you can let it paralyze you if you’re not careful. Through all of this, I have learned that taking risks requires making mistakes and also letting go of others’ opinions.
If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not making decisions. I for one, have found I would rather make mistakes and keep moving forward than stay stagnant in a personal or professional place that is not healthy or does not bring me joy.
