Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Epps.
Hi Emma, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Emma Epps I am 23 years old. I was born in Kingsport Tennessee, but my family moved to Millington, Tennessee shortly after. Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to help people feel just as beautiful on the outside as they were on the inside. As I got older, I started to think about what career route I was going to choose for myself. I always fixed everyone’s hair growing up for prom or special occasions.
Of course, the thoughts of your “normal” 40 hours a week jobs crossed my mind. Finally, after many prayers and figuring out what I wanted to be known for I pursued my dream of being a cosmetologist. I currently rent a booth at Envy hair studio with the most incredible people. It has been a roller coaster journey of building a name for myself. Which has come with many highs and lows. I couldn’t have done any of it without the support of my incredible parents and God guiding me every step of the way.
Now I get to do what I love every day and getting to make people feel beautiful in their own skin is the absolute best. When you turn that chair around and their faces light up is what makes everything come full circle. It is a humbling and heartwarming experience that I get to have a helping hand in daily.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Obviously, you start with nothing but a chair and word of mouth to get you started.
You have to constantly give yourself grace and remind yourself Rome wasn’t built in a day. Good things take hard work and time. So far, I have been blessed with the best and most supportive clientele which is growing every day.
God has been my rock and gives me peace through the highs and lows.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a cosmetologist. Which isn’t just hairstyling it includes facials, nails, as well as makeup.
I specialize in wedding and formal styles. It is a dream to be able to do that full-time. I also enjoy balayage which is a mixture of highlighting but in a freestyle way, so you make it your own.
I honestly love everything about this industry because it is always growing and you never stop learning.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see myself venturing more towards the wedding industry one day.
There is nothing like being a help to brides on their special day. Wedding day is every girl’s dream growing up and making the bride feel like the prettiest one in the room is the goal. I get to create art through that hair I do.
The options are endless with this career so I’m always trying to grow and think of ways to expand my business.
