Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamien (Kam) Bell.
Kamien, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Since a little boy, I can remember whenever I’d hear a song playing, I’d automatically imagine visuals in my head that fit the feel of the song. Music and video have always gone hand and hand with me, without one there wouldn’t be the other.
A camera didn’t find me until my junior year in college when I got a camera for my tv productions class at my alma mater Mississippi State, which ultimately made me change my major to broadcasting just to be around cameras. Shortly after, I interned with the athletics department for videography at Mississippi State where I got a great foundation for video, all the while teaching myself in my spare time and doing freelance video work around campus.
Over time I developed a style for how I shoot which is heavily based on composition, tones, and speed ramping. My love for who I am as a black man leads me to want to show a representation of black people in my work. Videography is something that is therapeutic for me and it brings me happiness.
I look forward to seeing where else it takes me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like the path through life is never a smooth one, there will always be a few bumps along the road.
A common obstacle I had starting out and feel like all creators have is self-doubt. A lot comes with releasing your work out into the world for people to have opinions on and look at. Another big obstacle for me was balancing shooting on top of attending school, it took me five and a half years to earn my degree and I even had to withdraw at one point because I had basically stopped going to classes.
I would say that just having perseverance despite failing plays a major part in life. Failure has always been the best teacher.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the Creative Video/Digital Media Coordinator for Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Here, I am responsible for all things video for all of their six campuses but my office is housed on the Senatobia campus. I conduct interviews and highlight programs the college has to offer, I come up with marketing strategies that appeal to students, prospective students, and the local community.
Also, because I have an SEC sports videography background, I provide hype videos and highlights for the teams on campus. In my life, if I’m not shooting, I’m definitely editing. I am always busy but I am most proud of how far I have come and it’s a great feeling to get paid to shoot video.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t think anything happens by chance or luck.
I feel like everything happens for a reason and I have put in countless hours to get to the point that I am. I’m not satisfied with the level I’m at now so I can only imagine how many more hours I have to put in to actually be at a level I’m truly happy with.
