Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Boyd.
Hi Julian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My parents David and Leticia Boyd started a D’bo’s Wings N More about 32 years ago (the wings are a staple in my hometown Memphis, TN and we really turned Memphis into the Hotwing capital of the world.
Some of our accomplishments over the years are:
- Won 1st place in a category the National Hotwing Festival in Buffalo, NY in 2011.
- Voted Top 15 Wing Spots in the U.S. by Men’s Journal in 2016).
- Voted Best Wings in the Mid-South consistently for over 25+ years.
- Voted Best Bite at the National Black Restaurant Week (Atlanta) in 2018.
We are committed to putting out the best products possible for every guest while leaving a lasting impact on our community.
After graduating from Morehouse College (2012), I pursued my MBA at UNC Kenan Flagler Business School (2018) where I focused on Entrepreneurship and Family Business. Over the years, I worked with many brands and helped them grow multiple franchised units. I always knew that wanted to be involved in the family business, but I wanted to focus on the growth and expansion through franchising.
We currently have two locations in Memphis and one franchised location in Detroit (Southfield), Michigan. We are also going to open in Winter Haven, FL (near Orlando), Chicago, Atlanta, Olive Branch, MS, and a few other markets.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was tough because there wasn’t a real blueprint for what it is that I was looking to do.
No one teaches this in school so there was a lot of trial and error. Fortunately for me, my family’s business is a very strong brand with a lot of experience in the industry and I surrounded myself with some really great mentors.
By staying persistent and continuously learning and growing (with a lot of prayers!) the hard work eventually paid off.

D’bo’s Wings has been well known for having the best wings in Memphis, TN for over 30+ years.
Our dedication to high-quality customer service and high-quality food products is what will forever separate us from any competitors. I always take pride in our humble beginnings as a black-owned business that started from a food truck to as many as 5 locations open simultaneously.
I’m proud that I am taking this business to new heights through franchising and we are actively looking for those looking to do so! I’m the President of Boyd Franchising and my main focus is helping small businesses grow through franchising as well. To date, I’ve worked on over 40+ franchise deals and it’s truly been a blessing to grow my family’s brand as well.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice is to surround yourself with as many mentors as possible. Never be afraid to ask for help, but also be prepared for that help! Timing is a very important aspect and if you’re ready it’ll happen!
