Today we’d like to introduce you to Slate Dump.
Hi Slate, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Proud Memphian of 12 years, born in the great state of West Virginia.
Lifelong songwriter, poet, DJ & guitarist. I had moved to Memphis in 2010 for a position as a teacher/counselor at Youth Villages, working in their level 4 lockdown facility in Bartlett with their violent juvenile offenders.
Upon moving to Memphis, I felt an instant connection, it truly feels like home to me here, and I really don’t see myself living anywhere else. Due to a hereditary blood disorder, I’ve had to disable out, now I’m focusing on songwriting full time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve often struggled with my disability, I’m not a fan of limitations, and I still push myself constantly to do more and explore the things I can within the field of music.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Since 2005, I have been writing songs and touring under the moniker of Slate Dump.
I’ve been lucky to play blues, jazz, and folk festivals all over the country, as well as tour with peers from around the world, and play shows with some of my heroes! I’m currently working on album number ten!
My songs have been recorded by more than 40 artists in 8 countries, and I’ve had terrestrial radio play on 3 continents! I have a t-shirt hanging in the WV Music HOF Museum, and have had one of my songs profiled on WV PBS!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid-19 was no sweat for me, because of my lack of a functioning immune system, I’ve been washing my hands and staying socially distant before it was cool.
Being on lockdown gave me time to write and record more, so I’m glad something positive came from the ordeal.
