Today we’d like to introduce you to Valencia Spears.
Hi Valencia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started blogging in 2012. Originally, it started as an assignment from my college professor. The assignment included writing critical reviews on certain events.
After a few reviews, I realized it was something I enjoyed. I have always enjoyed journaling, but writing reviews and sharing my thoughts with others was different for me. Surprisingly, my peers enjoyed reading my reviews, and I enjoyed engaging with my readers. So when I completed the class, I continued writing.
Over the years, I have written on different topics, which include book and restaurant reviews, fashion, life experiences, and faith. For me, writing is therapeutic, and it is ever-changing. While my blog focuses on faith, fashion and self-care, my ultimate goal is to encourage and inspire others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Blogging has its challenges. There are times I have an idea, but writing it can be difficult.
As cliché as it may sound, writer’s block is real. Because I take pride in what I write, I never want to publish a blog post just to say I have written something. While this is still a struggle, what has helped me is writing down my thoughts and trying not to overthink.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a blog and YouTube channel, where I discuss faith, fashion, and self-care. When I made the decision to continue with my blog, I started sharing stories about life experiences and how my faith helped me persevere. It is through those stories that I started to connect with other people. I, then, decided to share other topics that were important to me, like fashion and self-care.
As a little girl, my mother introduced me to shopping, and I would play dress up in her clothes. Admittedly, I still enjoy shopping and helping others style their wardrobe. I love when my friends ask me where they can find affordable, quality clothing.
It is through my conversations with friends and other women that I realized many women do not like shopping and others do not have the time to put effort into their looks. Oftentimes, it is because they too busy with work, busy being a wife and a mother. So I created a space, not only to share fashion finds, but also to encourage women to practice self-care.
In these conversations with friends, I realized how many women lose themselves in work, wifehood, and motherhood. I realized how easy it is to become so overwhelmed with the roles that we neglect to take care of ourselves. As a result, I became intentional about my mental, spiritual, and financial health. I am still working on my physical health.
I am a foodie, so I am a work in progress. I wanted to be sure that I was taking care of myself (“the woman”) first. Although self-care looks different for everyone, I share forms of self-care that have worked for me and encourage people to find what forms of self-care work best for them.
I am most proud of how I have grown as a writer. Stepping out of my comfort zone and creating a space for me to express myself, while connecting with others has been a joy.
So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is doing all that I was purposed to do in life. I know that I was created to do amazing things, and I want to make sure that, before I leave this Earth, I have poured out all I have.
In doing that, I am hopeful that people are encouraged and inspired to do the same.
