Conversations with Lauren Ammons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Ammons.

Hi Lauren, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started photography about eight years ago, taking my oldest daughter’s newborn photos. They weren’t the best but I knew I had a passion for this and what better way to learn than on your own child. Something I was able to capture for myself, through my eyes, as her mother.

As a kid I would always look out the window riding in the car and just see the beautiful sunlight casting shadows, making the fields and sky dance in color. I could imagine what I wanted to capture and I would see it. This is what brought me to my style of photography. I like to capture images that are true, candid, and not staged.

I bring an aspect of fun with my photos that gets the entire family involved, there is no “hold this pose”, “oh just one more time”; it is “run through that field” and I’m running backward capturing your laughs and smiles. The candid and natural smiles are always the best, the smallest details that only the parents could enjoy. My goal is for you to look at the photos and be able to recreate that feeling.

The world is a competitive place no matter what career or hobby you have, and photography is no different. That’s where I step in; at Lauren Ammons Photography my goal is to provide family photos, portraits, the little moments between life and your kids growing every single day, but make it affordable. My goal is to provide photos for the average family, single moms/single dads, moments of kids with their parents and be flexible in pricing, because I GET IT!

I am not trying to change the algorithm or bend the pricing in my area because other photographers have their pricing and nothing is wrong with that. I am aiming for everyone else. My goal is to make professional photography, which is usually unobtainable, easily accessible to everyone. Who said you can’t have quality and affordability.

I know the work that goes into it and I understand their pricing and the quality of photos other photographers provide, and there is nothing wrong with that. I just remember as a new mother, on a single income, wishing that I could have the types of pictures friends and family had.

I was a young photographer who had no family photos besides the ones I would take and could not justify paying an arm and a leg. A lot of times it seems you sacrifice quality. There is nothing wrong with box store photos, however, in my opinion, they always looked forced; that is not the goal at Lauren Ammons Photography. I love seeing the smiles, and hearing the laughs while we are capturing truly candid moments.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been easy. Everywhere we have ever lived there has been an immense amount of competition. However, there has never been anybody targeting the audience I am. My biggest struggle has been spreading the word about my style of photography and what my goal is to accomplish.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I feel I am most well known for the fun we have at sessions and my candid style of photography. I am most proud of how happy the parents are after each session. There is no stress or worry because kids will be kids and no matter how well they napped earlier or how much you make them laugh they will choose to do what they want during our session and that is what I am there to capture. The wide-eyed stares at my camera, all the attempts at making the baby laugh, the stories y’all share, and the realness of you and your family together.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about the Memphis area, is the vast scenery. Within a 20 min drive, you can be in what feels like a forest or a concrete jungle. There is a culture in Memphis that is unlike anywhere I have ever been, the only thing I don’t like about this city is the traffic!
