Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe McCall.
Hi Zoe, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started as a college assignment. I was studying creative arts, including Graphic design, Social media marketing, Photography, videography, and motion graphics. This project was a brand a business project. I decided why not make up a business to brand that is something I actually do and turn into a small business. I have always loved altering my clothes growing up.
I have painted on denim jackets, cut t-shirts into different styles, and everything else I could think of. So, I ran with that idea, remaking old clothes into something fun and new. I was brainstorming different names and Salvage and Stitch came up and it stuck, my mom instantly loved it and gave me a boost of confidence about the entire idea. That was back in 2019, I started with what I knew, painting on jean jackets and pants. Then, I took up embroidery and started putting flowers and designs on shirts and other items.
When 2020 hit, my mom had a sewing machine laying around and I started to stitch things together, half and half shirts, made a denim bucket hat, and whatever else I thought of. I also started screen printing, putting my own designs on shirts. Which was around the time I was really dealing with suicide and mental health issues. So, I decided to design positive messages promoting mental health and reminding people we need them here.
Because I needed to hear that. That’s pretty much where I am at now, sewing my own pieces from thrifted materials, making one one-piece and promoting mental health and positive messages with my own screen-printed designs
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all, I have always had a lot of confidence issues growing up so to have the confidence to keep going at what I want to do has been difficult.
I am still shocked every day when people tell me how much they love my stuff and how talented they think I am. It is a really cool feeling to see people loving things I create. I constantly doubt myself and if I should keep going.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a sustainable clothing brand creating one-pieces from thrifted materials.
I am known for mental health awareness messages. I am most proud of turning my terrible season of life into something positive to help other people around me.
I am set apart from other clothing brands because I hand make every item, and every item is one of a kind
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’m not really sure, I don’t think I have seen luck in either way in my business so far.
