Today we’d like to introduce you to Leslie Murphy.
Hi Leslie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a lover of art and design but spent most of my life in academia.
When I got the chance to move to New York to work for Columbia University, I was fortunate to live in the Chelsea Arts District. I immediately became fascinated and obsessed with art and design.
When I moved to Tennessee, I started doing some soul searching about what would make me happy- not only at work but also in life.
Looking at a career more as a lifestyle not just as a job, I realized it needed to be something at the intersection of art and business. After building my own home and taking a few classes in design, I decided to take that leap of faith about six years ago from my home office and I’ve never looked back!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many ups and downs.
However, I look at it kind of like most look at the stock market. It’s been way up and way down at times, but overall, it is generally on a steady incline when you look at the big picture over the course of many years.
Some of my personal struggles include a divorce, health and balance issues, and working hard to differentiate myself with new business offerings and supporting our lines (such as becoming our own cabinet dealer and creating our own line of textiles) that requires a lot of time and patience.
These ideas require an immense amount of extra time, focus, and energy and sometimes they work out, and sometimes they don’t. The ones that work manage to change the game forever for my team and my business, so I keep going.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Murphy Maude Interiors?

Our team is passionate about art and fashion and we look to blend those mediums with interior design through our work and design philosophy that “art is at the heart.” We also have a sister brand, Mable Originals which features wall murals and wallpapers. Each selection is designed to chart a course for an abundant lifestyle immersed in originality and creativity. We just launched our new collection – Movement – which features work by Memphis-based artist, Khara Woods and Georgia-based artist, Brandon Luther.
What do you think about luck?
I believe that one makes their own luck. You work as hard as you can and focus your mind and your energy on your end goal; that is how “luck” is made.
While it is true that some doors are just naturally open for people, if you have not worked on yourself and/or your business and goals, you will not be prepared to walk through any door that is opened.
