Today we’d like to introduce you to Trina Young.
Hi Trina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a freelance entertainment journalist who wrote an Elvis Presley column from 2011 to 2016 on Examiner.com (now AXS.com).
When their website shut down, I started my own website compiling Elvis news at Elvis-news.com.
With all the research, I was doing about Elvis for my Elvis News Examiner column, I realized there were many myths and stereotypes about Elvis still circulating in the mainstream media that were not true.
As a result, in 2015, I was inspired to write my first self-published book, ELVIS: Behind the Legend: Startling Truths About The King of Rock and Roll’s Life, Loves, Films, and Music.
Since then, I have written and self-published two additional books: ELVIS: The Army Years Uncovered: Behind the Scenes of the Two Years That Changed The King of Rock and Roll’s Life, and Elvis and The Beatles: Love and Rivalry Between The Two Biggest Acts of The 20th Century. My official book website is ElvisBiography.net.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It was definitely a challenge learning how to self-publish a book. Luckily, I have experience in graphic design and editing, so I was able to design the book cover myself and also edit my book and proofread it myself.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am proud of my extensive knowledge of rock and roll history pertaining to Elvis Presley and The Beatles. With extensive research into both musical phenomenons, I am able to see each artist from an honest perspective, recognizing their talent, but also their flaws. I strive to uncover the truth about their personal and professional histories.
I also specialize in the research of travel locations linked to rock and roll history. Regarding Elvis, I have traveled to many famous locations around the country that are linked to him, including Hawaii, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Florida, Palm Springs, New York, and of course, Tupelo and Memphis. I write articles and create videos explaining the musical history and significance of these locations.
When I went to Honolulu in 2016, I was disappointed that the Pearl Harbor National Memorial did not mention Elvis Presley. Elvis played a fundamental role in raising the much-needed funds to complete the memorial for those killed on the USS Arizona ship in the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. I wrote an article about this on my website when returning from my trip in 2016.
In 2021, a filmmaker contacted me about the documentary he was making about this very subject called “Elvis and The USS Arizona.’ I helped spread the word about his film and helped him raise money for a commemorative plaque recognizing Presley’s role.
As a music journalist, I am most gratified about getting the word out about topics like these and setting the record straight for Elvis Presley’s legacy.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
As a music journalist and author, I believe that my passion and enthusiasm for what I am writing about contribute greatly to my achievements.
Also, the desire to spread my knowledge about music is what motivates me to complete my projects successfully.
