Daily Inspiration: Meet Jalen Buchanan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalen Buchanan.

Hi Jalen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started when my mom bought me a keyboard and a drum set. I was at a very young age when entertainment became a big part of my life. I got into music at a very young age and started recording at 13. Meanwhile, in high school, I needed this extra credit in order to graduate so I ended up taking a graphic design class.

Not knowing that I would actually be designing artwork up until this day, I was just needing that extra credit. Now I don’t regret taking that class at all. Graphic design is a part of my everyday life second to music. I will always make music because it is in me.

Growing up in Mississippi you really have to stand out in order to get the recognition you deserve. I am 29 years old now and I’ve been working hard at it for approximately 12-13 years and many more to come. On the side, I am also into video editing and clothing.

So I guess you can say, I’m a jack of all trades looking to focus on 1 main talent which is hard when you have multiple. You can follow me on Facebook by searching Tak’um BigGwala or IG @BigGwalaTakum

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No roads are smooth. There have been times I wanted to give up and just work a regular job for the rest of my life and take care of my kids. My dad lied & told me I wasn’t his biological son when I was 18 years old on Father’s Day.

It made me wonder what my purpose was. Why I was here. I went off to college to see if that was my calling but it also didn’t work out in my favor.

Breaking my arm senior year in high school football was also a depressing stage in my life, being that football was my favorite sport and I was best at it. I didn’t know what else was after that.

Music was all I felt like I had left. The strong in me wouldn’t let me give up though on anything I put my mind to.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am mostly known for my graphic designs such as party flyers, cd cover designs, business card templates, logos, etc.

I am proud of my consistency and my growth in this field. I’ve come a long way and I take my time on my work because I am my worst critic.

That’s what sets me apart from others, I want my work to be some of the best work you ever received. Lately, I’ve been working with some major artists around the world and that’s a plus for me. Staying humble and moving forward is my only focus.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why?
Quality matters to me the most.

You can have 100 cheeseburgers, but if I can cook 1 good juicy steak and season it right I would choose it over 100 cheeseburgers any day. Quality over quantity. I don’t want to put out the most work. More like the best.
