Rising Stars: Meet Kristen Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Moore. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Let’s talk about Kristen M. Moore, a 30-year-old African American Cowgirl from Houston, Texas, the Acres Home area to be exact.

A beautiful mother of an extraordinary 2-year-old boy named Kodi and a hard-working entrepreneur. To me, horses are my life and all that I know.

Life without them has never been an option. It’s not all about rodeoing or making money, it’s always been about the passion I have for the animals as a whole. I consider horses to be such majestic animals which is why I have an appreciation for them that most would not understand.

My desire to rodeo honestly came from the thought and the feeling of an adrenaline rush that it would give me. Ladies Steer Undecorating is a rodeo event for females that gives that rush I’m talking about. It was an event that I fell in love with but unfortunately, after an accident during a rodeo, I decided to take a break and try my hand at Barrel Racing. There was a learning curve in understanding this sport at first but my friends that ran barrels made it all fun.

There were some ups and downs with Barrel Racing, more downs than ups, however, my advice to any young lady is to find motivation and stay motivated to keep going. Recently, I decided to breed my main barrel horse because we were one broodmare short at DK Performance Quarter Horses this year, which has briefly placed me on the sideline. I definitely didn’t want to do that but I don’t mind giving her some time off.

Towards the end of this past summer, I was seeking that rush I mentioned before so I decided to enter the Ladies Steer Undecorating at an All-Girls Rodeo and won 1st place and a buckle. The following week, I enter the Ladies Steer Undecorating at another rodeo that was in Cold Spring and won 1st place again. Man, what a feeling! The next rodeo I went to was in Oklahoma and I didn’t do as well, but I was still excited.

This year has been a little rough but I can’t wait till next year so I can get a fresh start for the rodeo season. When I’m not on horseback I am the owner of a small business, Miss Krissy Homemade Horse Kookies & Equine Service. Miss Krissy Homemade Horse Kookies came about after being fussed at for buying so many horse cookies/treats from the different local feed stores. I said, “if I knew how to make my own, I wouldn’t buy any more from the feedstores”.

A friend of mine at the time was like “let’s try to make some”. From there I got on the internet and searched for a few things and to the kitchen, I went. I only had limited ingredients that night but I was determined to make an actual product. The cookies were a hit with my personal horses and after posting pictures on social media, a few of my horse friends asked to buy some and Miss Krissy Homemade Horse Kookies was born!

My equine service came about because I started grooming horses and just helping others with certain services that would not require a vet’s attention. I was on a mission to help the horse owners in my area succeed in the proper maintenance and upkeep of their horses. I offer to groom, transport, feed, exercise, and more at a rate so that everyone can have an equal opportunity to maintain their livestock successfully.

This aspect of my business brings me the most joy knowing that there are people out there that are just as passionate about their horses as I am about mine. This has been one of my biggest accomplishments! Speaking of accomplishments! Accomplishing goals is something this girl is working on. I would really like to come up with various recipes/favors for Miss Krissy Homemade Kookies and expand the production to sell in all feedstores and even on Amazon.

For my rodeo goals, where should I start? I plan to attend more barrel racing clinics to improve my riding and start riding more outside horses. Our breeding program is small right now and it is actually a dream of mine to run horses that have been bred by us, at DK Performance Quarter Horses, at some of the bigger futurities such as the Pink/Ruby Buckle, Breeders Challenge, as well as other big rodeos like the Pendleton.

Overall, I’m going to build a brand that young ladies can relate to and look up to! I’m speaking it all into existence!!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My biggest challenge right now is working on expansion. My goal is to sell my treats nationwide and build a major brand for myself.

The obstacle that comes with rodeo is trying to keep my horses in the best shape possible. Horses are like gentle giants. They are fragile don’t let their size fool you. Keeping the sound and healthy is key!! The better they feel, the better they’ll perform.

Being a female in my field of work is never easy so I’d consider that a challenge as well. People aren’t as willing to support a female sometime because people doubt that we can get the job done.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I currently work for an alternative school as a paraprofessional and for the port of Houston as a longshoreman.

I am most proud of being a mother and business owner,

I am driven, hardworking, and strong. I am a female in a predominantly male field. I am a young African American female determined to be a successful young millionaire.

What do you think about luck?
Honestly, luck has had nothing to do with my business. I listened to God and my elder’s and I made sure to follow directions. My only downfall was Covid-19, it hindered my business tremendously!!!
