Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawty Pimp.
Hello Shawty Pimp, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a fan of Hip-Hop/rap music fan since I was a kid. When I got to high school, I started making mixtapes only using a drum machine, sampler, and microphone.
The cassette copies that were pressed up to sale were very limited so it was hard to get your hands on a copy. Once YouTube came out and other streaming internet sites the mixtapes were uploaded to these platforms by music fans.
So through word of mouth people can research these mixtapes via the internet and we can now reach people all over the world.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
It hasn’t been a smooth road.
One of the main struggles was having a budget for marketing and promotion and being able to travel and network outside of your home city. This is a business so as artists we need investors and management.
And you are also staying consistent and trying to balance that with your personal life. It’s time-consuming and you must sacrifice a lot to succeed in this business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My pops had this big record collection, so I came up listening to many soulful old-school R&B records. So it was natural for me to start producing music and writing my songs. With sampling being a major part of hip hop I had so many records to choose from that I could create my sound and style.
I eventually started working with others and producing artists and created my group, the Hype Unit. So I specialize in producing records and I’m also known for creating a catalog of mixtapes in the 90s.
I’m proud of the fact that even though these mixtapes were created in the 90s with a limited press-up, they are now being streamed all over the world thanks to the digital streaming platforms because we didn’t think our music would ever be heard.
What sets me apart from the rest is that I produce and make beats and am also a songwriter and artist with a unique ear for talent.
Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
I can do what I want to do when I want to do it. I believe in having control over your destiny. I enjoy being the boss of my life and making my schedule.
