Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Winfield.
Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always worked jobs in HR, recruiting, and staffing in my early 20s, and I found those particular positions appealing to my career focus.
Things that I saw working for other companies as far as their practices, how they treated individuals and lack of care was very disheartening to me and did not sit well. I thought to myself that there had to be a better way.
That prompted me to start my own agency where I would have full control over the ethics and practices taking place because I have the ability to do so.
My goal is and has always been to make great client and candidate experiences. To treat people like people and not just a number.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I started my company, I solely did everything on my own. I had no loans, no grants, and no formal expertise in completely running a business.
I did tons of research and got a great business coach (which I would advise anyone to do when starting a business) but not before I made a few errors. You learn as you go but my biggest thing was to KEEP GOING. Everything came out of my personal pockets and it would be months sometimes before I even saw a check.
So just imagine doing EVERYTHING on your own (managing the business, paying for everything out of pocket, having no real support, and getting paid once every 2-3 months in the beginning. Yeah, I had to have wanted this bad! But it paid off.
We’ve been impressed with ASW Staffing Corp., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
ASW Staffing is a staffing agency located in Memphis, TN that specializes in Clerical/Administrative and Distribution placements!
We focus on selecting the right candidates for our clients, not just a warm body but someone who fits into the criteria of what is being asked. What sets us apart is the fact that we actually care about our employees. While most like to please only the client, we strive to not only have good client relationships but good “people” relationships, and good candidate relationships.
We want individuals to feel like “they really care” or that we did the best we could to help them get to where they want to be. One thing I learned as a past employee is people isn’t so quick to leave where they are shown they are appreciated.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
No matter what your industry, smart entrepreneurs know the value of educating themselves on a continuous basis.
Whether it’s in business practices or just general knowledge, it is important to leave time in your schedule for reading and learning. Learning must be continuous!
