Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalia V. Holliman.
Hi Khalia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My journey started at the age of 17. I was a junior attending White Station High School. I started doing my mom’s makeup whenever she would attend special events.
On one particular day that I never thought would come to fruition, my mom who is Kim King picked me up from school and told me, “As soon as we get home, pack up all of your makeup, I am taking you somewhere.” That was it, and that was all.
I arrived in downtown Memphis in a building where I walked into a fashion show hosted by the King of event hosting, Sir Glen Allen. At that moment, I was told that I would be doing 5 different faces for the fashion show. After finishing those faces, the host told me to hold my hand out and began paying me.
If it was not for my mom noticing and showcasing the developing gift that I had for enhancing the canvases of people in the mid-south area, I would have not made V’Toria Visions Inc. into a professional makeup business that is going on its’ fifth year in being a certified business.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to getting where I am was not easy, but that is what makes my story worth telling to motivate others that are trying to get here. I did makeup in several places for example in my dorm on the University of Memphis campus, in my mom’s house, and even set up space to do makeup in my grandma’s house.
Anywhere I resided, that is where I made my coins. Another struggle that came was losing confidence in my gift when loyal clients would go to other makeup artists within the city. I am my harshest critic so I always asked myself, “Why did they go to another client,” “Did I do something they did not like?” and “Am I not good enough?”
This just made me work harder to perfect my craft in artistry and demonstrate versatility. The pandemic was almost a breaking point since there were a lot of restrictions on attending public places and special events within the city of Memphis. And of course, that meant my income would be affected.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional makeup artist in the city of Memphis. My business is called V’toria Visions Inc. which began in 2017 while being a junior in high school. The name of my business was inspired by my middle name which is Victoria. I specialize in beauty enhancement of the face as it relates to brows, lashes, and makeup of course.
I am known for my impeccable skills as a makeup artist, being a singer, and also will be known as a first-time elementary educator this upcoming fall. I am most proud of the fact that God has allowed me to use every gift he has given to produce multiple streams of income while also uplifting and empowering a wide age range of individuals within the city of Memphis.
What sets me apart from others is the hunger, hustle, and happiness that I possess to allow me to elevate in every area of the many careers that I have. These characteristics that set me apart are contagious to the many encounters whether it is a client or a student. They continue to see the best in me.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a very bubbly, funny, and talkative person.
Everybody that knew me growing up knew that I was the person to hang with if you wanted to laugh. I grew up singing in the church starting at the age of eight.
I started playing the viola at 12. I honestly did not start getting into makeup until high school. Honestly, I got into makeup to conceal my flaws of severe acne and hyperpigmentation I dealt with throughout my teen years.
What a coincidence, right?
