Today we’d like to introduce you to Jewel Stone.
Hi Jewel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Funny thing, I grew up watching my grandmother bake anything that she could find in the kitchen to bake. I would always tease her and say, “Grandma you will bake ANYTHING!” I found that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree later on in life. I fell into her very steps. I started out experimenting with cookies in 2016. It was something that I found interest in.
I tried my hand, and I posted the cookies on social media. They took OFF! People wanted to buy them, to my surprise! I immediately started selling them. At this point, it was time to name them. I came up with “Kjscookies”, after my daughter’s initials. Everyone loved Kjscookies and I sold them for years. I always had in the back of my mind that I wanted to try cakes, but the thought just went away because I didn’t know where to even start.
2021 I hit a pivot in my life, and I needed an outlet to channel my focus. I ran across another local baker here in Memphis (Sweet Aroma) and I took a scratch baking class from her. The cake that I made was a birthday cake for my mom’s 50th birthday. I got so much love and confirmation after posting and tasting that cake! I knew this was it. The bookings went from there.
I also had a photoshoot coming up and I had to make myself a shirt (I make customized shirts as well). In a rush, I made myself a cake for a prop and I put “FLOUR GIRL” on a shirt. I’m not sure what inspired it, but it flowed so well! It’s what my heart led me to call myself. And that is how Flour Girl Bakery was birthed.
All of our recipes are from scratch and our cakes and desserts are made with love!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Life challenges, I think, happen every day. While baking isn’t currently full-time for me, I still deal with working, being a mom, and being a wife. It took a while to balance it all out and fit everything in one day, but I am doing it! And I am extremely proud of myself for it.
I still continue to invest in myself and take classes to always stay up on the latest trends and knowledge about the cake world! Things are changing daily. I want to ensure that my customers get the best of the best for what they pay for.
So, no it is not smooth all the time, but it is worth it if you have the passion for it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
