Hidden Gems: Meet Olivia F. Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia F. Scott.

Hi Olivia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a native Memphian who left the city as Central High-Class President (Class of 1991) for the University of Missouri-Columbia Journalism school in 1991. Upon earning my B.J. degree in Journalism/Advertising Track in 1995, I moved to Chicago where I worked at advertising agencies Leo Burnett, DDB, Ogilvy Action, and Frankel. To experience the media side of advertising, I moved to New York City in 2001 where I resided until 2020. Presently, I spend my time between New Orleans and Memphis, TN as I am a Professor of Advertising for Loyola University, Founder/Owner/Operator of Omerge Alliances Marketing Firm, and Creator of Freedom At The Mat.

My marketing firm has a focus on beauty, wellness & lifestyle initiatives, specifically event productions such as the ESSENCE Wellness House, ESSENCE Health Hub and Freedom At The Mat experiences. I am a creator at heart who loves to design content that serves the well-being of people, whether it is articles (I am a contributor to ESSENCE and have a blog on Medium), or marketing campaigns (visit omergealliances.com for details), video content such as found on YouTube.com/FreedomAtTheMat, in addition to our art-yoga mats, aromatherapy candles and guided journal. The concept for Freedom At The Mat originated in 2018 in NYC after my divorce and burnout in the advertising and media industries, and we were formally established in 2020 during the pandemic due to our community’s need.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My #1 challenge is the focus. I am an infinitely creative person with many ideas and aspirations, yet one lifetime. So, I often overextend and find myself stressed. I am learning to break my day into 4 parts, 6-9 AM, 9 AM-12 PM, 12 PM-3 PM, and 3 PM-8 PM.

This way I can compartmentalize when I write when I teach when I address client concerns, and when I have space to read and replenish. The other challenge I have is saying no. I am learning to delegate more, which means creating systems that reflect my creativity for others to model so I can accomplish more through team members.

My journey is divinely led daily, and believe my personal best is on the horizon.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about omergealliances.com?
Omerge Alliances, established in 2009 is a marketing management consultancy. We specifically provide marketing strategy, advertising creation, and event production consulting to beauty, wellness, and media companies. Since inception, we have served & serviced Curb Records, IMAN Cosmetics, Andre Walker Hair, UrbanSkin Rx, ESSENCE, Naturalicious, Game Show Network among others.

Freedom At The Mat is a brand and trademark held by Omerge Alliances. Our focus with FATM is to drive the theme of wellness specifically with busy women 25-54, many with household and children responsibilities who find that self-care is nearly impossible. We offer free affirmation, meditation, wellness practitioner interviews, and physical yoga content for under 30 minutes on our YouTube channel for wide accessibility.

Our products, yoga mats, candles, tanks & guided journals are sold on FreedomAtTheMat.com, with 15% of all profits automatically contributed to nonprofit organizations serving the health & wellness of women and girls.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Influencers are taking over. Advertisers are increasingly turning to influencers to convey their brand messages. Advertisers are also continuing to shift the lion’s share of their media dollars to digital vs traditional platforms of TV, radio, and print.

Marketing agents and consultants must be astute in new media and know how to negotiate with influencers and utilize best practices with the newest social media outlets. Due to the easy nature of creating content, the number of channels to reach consumers is continuing to proliferate, resulting in intense audience fragmentation. This dovetails into overuse and overreliance on social media, which has proven harmful to the mental health of many, mostly teens & young adults.

The result of poor mental health in our society drives our emphasis on creating accessible, “capsule” (short form) wellness content through our Freedom At The Mat platforms. Given the mental health condition of many after COVID, we plan to continue growing our content offerings and using our product sales to drive impact through 501c3 organizations.
