Exploring Life & Business with Neama Rahmani of West Coast Trial Lawyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neama Rahmani.

Hi Neama, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was recruited from Harvard Law School by the largest law firms in the country. That is where I started my legal career. I represented corporations such as Disney, Marriott, and the Roman Catholic Church with teams of lawyers, usually defending them in civil litigation. Despite the pay, I was not professionally fulfilled, so I left the comfort of Big Law to become a prosecutor. The United States Department of Justice hired me to prosecute drug and human trafficking cases along the US/Mexico border. I then moved to Los Angeles, handling cases involving public corporations, government ethics, and election law. I wanted to become a judge, but then my partner, Allen, who had recruited me from law school, approached me about starting a personal injury law firm. Initially, I was hesitant because of my perception of injury lawyers, but Allen convinced me that we would be helping people and would have a higher-end personal injury practice. We started our firm eight years ago and have grown to 25 lawyers and 100 staff. Looking back, it was the best decision I could have made for my career. I love my coworkers and clients and especially enjoy the impact I have in helping those who have been wronged.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
The road could have been smoother. Unlike most lawyers who are paid hourly, we work on a contingency fee basis, which means we are only paid if and when we win. The first two years were particularly challenging. Because of budget cuts and court closures, it takes years to take a case to trial. By year 3, we started making money and breaking even. I give a lot of credit to our initial team of lawyers and staff, who worked hard for less money while we were getting our firm off the ground. Our work is vital as it can take months or years to see results.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us more about your business.
West Coast Trial Lawyers is a firm made up of professionals dedicated to fighting for those harmed by unfair corporations and insurance companies that profit over human lives. Our mission is to be the voice for those who are wronged by everyday injustices. We specialize in a range of personal injury matters. This includes car accidents, pedestrian accidents, and wrongful death incidents. We work on a contingency fee basis, which means you don’t pay a thing unless we win or settle your case. Our goal is to provide our clients with the best legal representation possible. We will do whatever it takes to get you the legal justice and compensation you deserve for your losses.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
My advice is to take the plunge and not fear the outcome. You only have to hit once; if you love what you’re doing, you’ll enjoy coming to work every day. When it comes to love and business, you can fail 90% of the time and still be a success.
