Exploring Life & Business with Nikki Qualls of The Slay Room

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Qualls.

Hi Nikki, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to introduce yourself.
Hello. My name is Nikki Qualls. When I was 14, I fell in love with my hair. I loved to change my hair when the opportunity presented itself to my mom. She understood. It was my art, my me time. Eventually, I started charging a little for my styles. Kinky Twists, at the time, was my best seller. I would always do a Quick Weave on myself or a Ponytail. I loved Kinky Twists too. I took my senior portraits in Kinky Twists. I grew up in Greenville, MS. I moved to Memphis after high school. I’ve been back maybe twice since then. It’s bittersweet; home is. I went to Empire Hair School in October 2016. I performed well; I almost had perfect attendance. I kept excellent grades despite my personal life. I lost access to all my social media and friends and family. Reluctantly, I kept going & I persevered. After graduating in November 2017, something drastic happened, which caused me to take a year off. I lost over 40 lbs, stressing. Then I snapped out of it. I got back up in 2019.

I worked at A few salons before I became where I am. I didn’t stop because I was homeless or Carless. I went from being homeless to having a home—carless to having 2 cars paid in full. I went from having no Social media in 2018 to having almost 24K Followers on Instagram & Big audiences on my other platforms. Great for business. Consistency caused great results & placed me where I am.

Nevertheless, I persisted. Hard work pays off. Surprisingly, You’re first to hear that I am now Part Salon Owner with my best friend Keeunia Martin, CEO of Kstylist Braids. Our Grand opening of A TOUCH OF CLASS SALON will be held in December. Details will be posted soon on our social media. I Thank God For everything.

You wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
When I was homeless, I caught a ride or Uber. I stayed in hotels or with friends. None of that made me stop being a great hairstylist. I’m always on time & I bring consistency and betterment. I’m constantly improving in quality while improving in time efficiency, nonetheless. The memory of my hardships allows me to perform even perfectly. It’s like a constant reminder & proof that I’m great. I can overcome anything in life when I set my mind to it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Slay Room?
At The Slay Room at Now A Touch of Class Salon, I specialize in clean and healthy hair and scalp. I thoroughly clean the scalp with a clarifying shampoo, then with a moisturizing shampoo, and Concluding (if any treatments aren’t added) with a moisturizing conditioner. At the shampoo bowl, you’ll receive a life-changing shampoo. I ask about your hair goals, and we treat & aim for those desired results. The style is just like the cherry on top of your favorite dessert to me. That alone is clearly what separates me from others. I’m susceptible to my client’s hair and scalp health. & I was also guiding confidence not only in their esteem but in faith for restoration, being consistent with me, your hair will grow healthy. I can bet money on it.

What do you think about risk?
I’ve sacrificed living comfortably out of state with my mom to being homeless to pursue my passion for cleaning and styling hair in Memphis- where my clients are. I couldn’t leave them. I could not move and lose them. It was a risk I was not willing to take. Now we have our Salon right here in Memphis.
